Darkroot Monsters

Brainstorming Darkroot Monsters

Overview: Monsters of the Darkroot setting. Some are connected to the Darkroot, others are not.   Sandworms: Large underground carnivores, they wander the desert sands and go towards any seismic motions, swallowing prey whole or dragging it down. They are considered one of the land's apex predators, occasionally tunneling to other parts around the tree.   Perhaps they are tree worms to a degree, mutated by the Darkroot.   Dream Birds: Large Harpies resembling owls. Besides being large and floofy, their eyes are enchanting, able to induce dreams in someone they desire.   Magical Rats: Rats that have learned to find food where it is stored. However, these rats seemed to have grown in intelligence or at least be transmitters of a plague much scarier than normal. Sufferers gradually become infatuated with rats, living with them and feeding them. In advanced stages, although horribly deteriorated, they will continue to walk around and care for the rats. Upon death, sometimes smarter rats will revive the body and control it.   Giant Walking Bird: A big fat flightless bird. It is far bigger than a typical Meenlock, probably coming up to the knees of a human. It is highly aggressive, chasing after whatever it can find. Perhaps it is a wyvern that resembles a bird. They hoard items, protect their eggs, and fearlessly charge even bigger creatures for the slightest slights.   Fire Creature: A monster that provides red lifeforce or fire lifeforce that isn't a Red Lifeforce Beetle.   Yetis: They are cold-dwelling creatures of the mountains. They decorate their horns readily. Some of them have become unofficial berserkers. They try to avoid civilization, but someone has been killing their food sources, forcing them to attack outlying settlements to not starve.   Yeti Author's Note: I think they would fit here, subject to change.   Lifeforce Beetles: Magical beetles that absorb enough magic to drop a soul. While most insects don't have enough soul to extract, these somehow do. They could potentially be connected to the Necro trees. They eat the dead that pops up, scavengers and also opportunistic predators. They are rich in life force and nutrition, often a staple of the lands.   Probably low on the food chain of Treeland, eating the abundant energies and scavenging bodies around the tree.   They are sort of like Honeydew beetles, constantly feeding on the Tree's sap. .   .

Rocky Monsters

Rocky Monster Overview: Monsters that stick to rockier areas.   Delver Slugs: An unlikely miner's friend. They wander around, eating rock using acids it produces regularly. This slime can be collected to either soften or dissolve stone easily. They dissolve and digest mostly rock, ignoring most ores. However, some can become addicted to said ores.   Avalanchers/Stone Singers: Large rocky isopod like creatures. They have eye and basically sensory stalks which can retreat into their shell. They have devastating sonic abilities, which they use to cause avalanches on prey or enemies. Able to withstand the rough and tumble of an avalanche, they can use them as quick means of transportation. They have a rocky outer shell and 6 powerfully built and solid limbs. Being so sensitive to noise, they can be calmed with a masterful display of music and performance. They can also spit acid.   Psychic Brute Beetle Rhinos: These are large humanoids with semi-insectoid armor, but their defining traits are glowing crystals, especially on their heads. While physically capable, they revel in telepathic torture, detailing grisly fates for any who dare stumble into their territory. Most have a single head horn which glows a special color, the main source of their psychic powers. While they do hunt solo, several can and will organize into smaller war bands and then larger enclaves, mostly working together but occasionally battles of dominance are fought.   Use the Stone Singers as sort of dogs, alerting them to newcomers and often intruders.   .

Frogs

Frog Overview: Denizens of a swamp filled with frogs and frog-like beings.   Frog Meenlock (Meenlock idea): It is the blue healer of the Meenlocks. It has a long tongue it uses to manipulate objects out of reach, but especially to retrieve fallen meenlocks so it can revive them.   However, this frog monster could also be a smaller species that opposes the Rootlord.   Froglings: Frog humanoids with a long tongue they use to manipulate things. They can pull levers and pull things down. They tend to live in raised housings, have spears. They sometimes use their tongue to bring in the meenlocks to stab them.   Frog Trolls: Larger Frog beings. They have 3 eyes on eyestalks and are functionally stronger but dumber Froglings. The froglings worship these larger beasts. Their tongues can drag down far stronger things, and if they manage to grab a meenlock, they will tear it to shreds.   Giant Frogs: Frogs that have become larger, probably due to magic. Their tongue is strong enough to pull in small creatures, such as Meenlocks. .

Mushroom Monsters

Mushroom Monsters Overview: These Mushrooms delivered sustenance to the Original Tree and spread its roots further in exchange for lovely sap. This relationship blossomed and still exists. Being the tree was so big, the mushrooms grew with it.   Mushroom Strangler Tree: Once a noble tree, the creature beforehand harbors many a monster. While it moves on mostly unchanged legs, it also is engorged with mushrooms. It has parasitic tendrils that make it move, moving this combination of dead tree, mushroom colony, and controlling parasite. The tendrils seek out new hosts, throwing the dangerous shrooms at anyone they can find.   Bark Walkers: Trees that move. Often, they are seeds from another tree that have laid themselves into a humanoid or animal shape. Over time, they can grow to resemble that shape, using the bones as a base to grow off of. They are woody in appearance, only bearing slight resemblance to their cores.   The Nightmares: Dark creatures brought forth by dark rituals. They often wear skulls or have skulls integrated into them. They are tribal, with shamans reviving their fallen, large warriors protecting, and watchful archers. They often have massive collections of bodies and loot from unlucky people or brave knights who have fallen. They are seemingly made from literal nightmare matter.   They are nightmares made manifest. Collected around negative energy, they are formed from the bodies of the dead, often their bones. They have some lifeforce powering them, but not much, if any at all. They are made of tree bark and roots animated by evil energy.   Redcap: Demented evil mushrooms. They have a blood-soaked cap and body, with an oversized weapon and large boots. They seek out blood, where they can lay new Redcaps to grow. Partially vampiric, they have at least one oversized fang which they drop upon death. When sufficient blood is found, they rip out a tooth and place it into the blood, which will slowly grow into a new redcap.   .
