Chocoa (cho-koh)

The planet of Bo Kae does not have coffee. However, chocolate is universal, and a strong bitter chocolate drink called chocoa is considered the planet's equivalent of coffee. It contains a little more caffeine than black tea, though extra-caffeinated versions are also commonplace in areas with high immigrant populations. Flavoured varieties are also popular, though more expensive when purchased as such.   Chocoa is drunk to taste, with many ways of altering it. Milk is often added, in varying quantities, and many drink it sweetened. Some popular additions are mint or a pinch of salt. Some more luxurious flavours include floral infusions or mixed spices.

History

Chocoa was first invented in Anttanica around -1234 (Empire Calendar). It was generally made weaker than modern variations, as the Bonari people are more sensitive to caffeine than most other sapients. By the time the Anttanican Empire was established on Bo Kae, the populations of its occupied nations were far more diverse, which led to a standard being set for a consistent level of caffeine agreeable to the majority. For those individuals particularly sensitive, various processes of decaffeination were experimented with, and by the year 359, decaf options were commonplace in the market.
