The Great Froniter

The Great Frontier is a large stretch of galactic space, approximately 20% of the Reknown-Galaxy, which is unaligned with the Mainyu, the Metropolis Republic, or the Renge Hegemony. This stretch of space flows in an uneven line from one corner of the galaxy to its opposite, bisecting the galaxy near its core. Existing as a mutually self-imposed cultural and demilitarized zone between the Mainyu, the Hegemony and Metropolis, the Great Fortier is filled with dozens if not hundreds of smaller, sub-galactic powers, that are made up of Circle Mage Societies, lost exiles/Exodus survivors of the Metropolis, secret corporate holdings, non-hegemonic Renge worlds, and other unknown civilizations. Recent Mainyu incursions have pushed this unofficial border thousands of light-years closer towards Metropolis and Hegemony space, swallowing entire civilizations. Metropolitan gate travel into the Great Frontier or into Mainyu Space is highly restricted if not outright illegal for fear of the Mainyu discovering the secret to gate travel.
There are several non-aligned political powers in the Great Frontier. The most pervasive group is the Red Circle, which is a matriarchal Primal society that dots the entire Reknown-Galaxy. The representatives of the Red Circle, the Red Ladies, are granted free access and travel to all space and societies throughout the Great Frontier and are highly sought for their wisdom and council.
The largest political power of the Great Frontier is the Galactic Alliance, a collection of non-Metropolitan, Renge, or Mainyu species that have band together for mutual economic and military protection.
Outside of the Galactic Alliance, there are the Highwaymen, a sarcastically named paramilitary force, and the loosely linked societies they protect. The Highwaymen patrol their territory against pirates, raiders and slavers. The El-Men Stratocracy or as they like to call themselves, the Free El-Men Alliance (FLA) is a collection of El-Men pirate lords that have laid claim to the interstellar trade canals that connect the galaxy. Using stolen, purchased or seized equipment, the pirate lords have carved out an impressive area of space. Property is forcefully seized, or “taxes” leveled against those located in or around the Stratocracy. There are frequent clashes between the Stratocracy and the adjacent Highwaymen.
The smallest, but most militarily powerful of the Great Frontier societies is the Aeonic League, which is the loose governing body of the wilder people. Acting as an off-shoot or sister group to the greater Red Circle society, the Aeonic League is one of the few peoples who actively seek out conflict with the Mainyu and report attacking the Akha Airime Ad, the mythical “Worldships” of the Mainyu. The Aeonic League’s border with the Mainyu is infamous, known throughout the Great Frontier and Hegemonic space as the Graveyard. There, the Wilder-devastated remains of thousands of the great Mainyu Akha Airime Ad world-ships have created a serious navigational hazard. However, because of its huge size, there are likely many other star fairing civilizations and peoples yet undiscovered by the rest of the galaxy hidden away in the Great Frontier.
