Extinction of the Yareteslani and Other Precursors
    Extinction

Long before the current species of Known Space, various other civilisiations ruled over the galaxy. From what little modern archeologists have been able to find, it appears that their technological level was greatly beyond that of any modern, known nation. Prime among these appears to have been the Yareteslani, a species of somewhat humanoid entities who believed themselves to be gods and treated other species like something akin to spoiled pets, giving them anything they could desire. It is unkown what caused the Extinction, but whatever it was, it was quick, sudden and thorough. All technological civilisiations (and according to some estimates, even agricultural ones) were destroyed utterly, their cities raised their monuments defaced and even their megastructures erased from the universe. The most popular theory is that it was a grey goo event of some design. Precious little remains from this time, what there is mostly exists in the form of experiments left behind in the ecology of worlds or even, seemingly, the very fabric of reality itself. Either way, the occasional scraps of technology and culture are considered priceless and worth the attention of entire nations.

Founding of the Galactic Defense Initiative
    Founding

After the Commonwealth-Federation Joint Command served as a proof of concept, the CoS and BHFC officially cement their alliance with the founding of the GDI. The Tahirian Confederacy, a nation known for its neutrality and role of mediator, is also a founding member. The GDI officially opposes the Legion of Zrass and Vorovian Concord.

Discovery of Jump Physics by Pathbringers
    Technological achievement

The Pathbringers were the first to rediscover Jump-travel after the Extinction. They were the first to travel space again in the so-called 'new galaxy'. With this event, the stars were reborn.

    Contact Wars
    Military action

Even though they had already been aware of eachother for around 90 years, it was only in 44 BI that the Jre, Bwojom, Toshran and Pakoph species physically met with eachother. Whilst for many other species true First Contact was a thing to be celebrated, for these 4 it quickly escalated into war. This was mainly due to profound ideological differences, as well as the rapid expansion of every nation involved causing them to quickly come into conflcit with eachother over resources and territory. This all escalated fully in the so-called Sherkoshr Incident, where diplomatic talks between all 5 nations ignited a brief but fierce space battle in orbit of the planet Sherkoshr. This would become the first battle in what would be known as the Sherkoshr War. This was only the first of 5 wars, however, as every war would be followed by short periods of tense 'peace' which would always reignite into war. In spite of all the hatred the Wars inspired, many (especially by the end of the Wars) wished for true peace and even friendship with the other parties. The Wars would only truly stop when one of the Invader fleets reached the space which would later become the CoS. It was only then that the various combatants were forced to unite in the face of a greater threat.

    Invasion War

    Invader Ship by Spingular E.Zorkman
The Invaders were a mysterious race from the Reaches Beyond. Little is known of them. Some belief they are one species with many sub-species and organic 'robots' of sorts, others believe them to be a collective of species. Some belief them to be sapient and even highly intelligent, whilst others believe they are automatons, only capable of limited tought. They seemingly appeared out of nowhere in the area now known as Invader's Gate. They appear to be biomechanical in nature, with most of their members posessing various highly unnatural traits (lack of a mouth of any kind, 'tentacle'-like appendages capable of interfacing with their technology, build-in firearms and so on). They did not seem to have any real motives beyond harvesting as many resources as possible. This was usually done at the expense of other species, oftentimes taking apart habitats and practicaly destroying planets and moons. They often seemed to behave erratically, perhaps even randomly. The Invaders had technology which often surpassed that of Known Space nations at the time, such as force fields, highly advanced genetic engineering and a type of jump-travel which seemd to ignore many of the conventions of ordinary jump. The 5 fleets that entered Known Space brought great destruction over many known nations at the time.

    Jrejkar Massacre
    Disaster / Destruction

In 4 BI the Invader fleet arrived in the UTCJ-controlled Jrejkar system. Initially, system authorities assumed that the fleet was controlled by one of their enemies in the Contact Wars, but it quickly became apparent that they were entirely alien. The fleet began attacking various outposts in the outer belt of the system, and eventually began harvesting as many asteroids as possible there. At this point, the evacuation of the planet began in case of an invasion. The fleet continued their advance in the system, easily defeating the system's fortress station as well as no less than 5 UTCJ squadrons send to stop it. Once it arrived at Jrejkar proper, the fleet first took out any orbital infrastructure and harvested its resources for itself. It then used an unkown type of bomb which detonated the planet's atmosphere, thereby effectively evaporating any unevacuated inhabitants in a matter of hours. After this it began to harvest the planets resources and, using completely unkown means, managed to gather most of the easily accesable planetary resources in only a few standard days.    After the Massacre, a white peace was almost inmediately signed by all Contact Wars belligerents, and peace talks were inmediately started.

    Epherakolon Victory
    Military action

For three years, the Invasion War raged in the now newly-established Mutual Defense Coalition. Squabbling military leaders and politicians, ineffective strategies, and a simple lack of knowledge allowed the Invaders to bring the Coalition nations to the brink of collapse. The fact that this did not happen can mostly be attributed to a select few individuals in scientific, political, military, economic and even religious circles. Thanks to the work of these individuals the collapse of the Coalition could be avoided time and time again, and eventually Coalition forces would even get a chance to destroy the Invader fleet once and for all. The plan in question was largely designed by a Shakaran officer by the name of Ashrrol Tekanbash who, thanks to outstanding service in the war, had already been made head-officer of the entire Coalition war effort. The plan made use of various Invader weaknesses which had been discovered by analysing past battles, scraps of the few Invader ships which were destroyed, and information coming from other nations hit by the Invasion. In essence, the plan was to use the unique properties of the Epherakolon System. These include the rather dense asteroid belt of the system, as well that it was an unusually weak pulsar, to the point that it could still interfer heavily with force field technology but was survivable by Coalition ships using some desperate measures. It had been observed previously that Invader ships would target systems with a large amount of iterium signals emanating from them. Most likely because that indicates a large presence of a jump-age civilisation in any system, and therefore a high abundance of high-quality resources. Because of this, the system was laced with iterium beacons (many of which having to be moved there haphazardly), and the asteroid belt in particular received a high concentration of them in addition to 'skeleton buildings' meant to read like true mining outposts to sensors. In truth, these structures were filled with anti-matter bombs. Once the Invader fleet arrived, they were quickly ambushed by a small squadron of Coalition forces, meant to appear as a local defense fleet.   This caused the Invader fleet to retreat into the asteroid belt, in an attempt to collect the necessary resources to restore the damage retained in this surprise attack. This caused them to absorb the antimatter bombs, which led to the loss of a large number of their forces. The remaining forces, already weakened by years of fighting in Known Space, and by the EM-radiation from the local pulsar, were destroyed within the next few days.   The Victory marked the first time an entire Invader fleet was destroyed in the Invasion War, and similar tactics to those of the Victory would be employed by other powers to destroy the majority of the remaining fleets. In addition, the Victory marked a turning point in the relations of the Coalition nations, and the rise to power of Ashrrol Tekanbash.

Founding of the Commonwealth of Stars
    Founding

Flag of the Commonwealth by ATPkraken
For 9 years after the Epherakolon Victory, the Coalition nations grew closer and closer together. Eventually, in large part thanks to the Unification Part (a party of journalists, political thinkers and similar dedicated to realising the unification of the Coalition powers), true unification would take place. This was also in no small part thanks to the charisma and political plotting for unification by Ashrrol Tekanbash, who used all the resources and popularity the Victory got him to both gain more power himself and to bring the Coalition closer together. Eventually, this would reach a climax in the Sherkoshr Conference, symbolically held at the site where the Contact Wars started. In this conference, the Act of Unification, unifying the Coalition powers into one nation was signed. Apart from this, the so-called Sherkoshr Accords would come to serve as the constitution of this new nation.   The name Commonwealth of Stars was chosen to reflect the universalness of the nation, and the fact that it was founded for the common good of all its members. Its government structure was essentially a compromise between the various members. A Senate, chosen by the various member-states was installed to appease the United Trade Committee of Jaron and the Holy Republic of Pakolon. The law that Senators must first prove how capable they were in some way, then, was a compromise to the Bwojom Union. Finally the office of Emperor, a single individual who could become a symbol for the nation and its people and who could steer the nation's future without worrying about being removed from office, was installed at the behest of the Shakar Kingdom and the Mboshroni Empire.   Ashrrol Tekanbash was made the first Emperor of the Commonwealth as he was largely responsible for the nation's creation to begin with, was immensely popular, and was already the main face of the Coalition/Commonwealth nations as a whole anyways. Later historians would often claim that Ashrrol essentially build a personality cult around himself.   In the years following this, the Commonwealth would quickly rise to power in their sector of the galaxy, though they'd remain a fairly loose and decentralised nation in this period of their history. The ideology of Ashrrolism would also be cemented in this period.
