Red Wench

History

The Red Wench is a traditional waŹ»a kaulua built in 19,971, Maui, where she was used as a fishing and small transport vessel between the different islands of the Republic of Shanai until 19,987. Following damage due to a hurricane, the ship was sold, changing hands repeatedly until being refurbished in 20,006. The Red Wench, along with a sandbar island home, were sold to Jon as a packaged deal due to their neglect and damage over the years in 20,016, where the ship was fully repaired.

Alterations

The Red Wench had to go under extensive renovations in order to be brought up to Shanai's safety regulations and due to previous damages. Initial damage the ship saw from hurricanes and bad weather required the full replacement of her hull and first mast, as well as replacement sails due to mildew. An engine was installed for emergencies as well as inflatable emergency rafts along the deck. GPS trackers, signal lights, and a flare cabinet have also been added as per the Shanine Sailing and Safety Regulation.   Following a breakup, an ex-girlfriend of Jon's spray painted the boat with the word 'kanapapiki' (lit: 'Son of a bitch'), after which Jon began calling the boat 'The Red Bitch'.

Use

Primarily, The Red Wench serves as the personal boat of Jon and Asher Burman for fishing and transportation to and from Jon's home. Although built for a small crew of up to 15 individuals, the boat is most often only used by Jon himself or as a pair with Asher in shallow waters. The ship never ventures out into oceanic water, and is almost always used on a short route between Jon's island to the big island of Shanai, though is capable of doing so. These short back and forth trips are commonly the pair going to and from work, grocery runs, or events on the main island.   For fishing, The Wench is most often used for shallow oceanic fishing by way of pole and net, though occasionally sees use for spear fishing. More commonly, the boat is used to transport Asher to harvesting locations for clams, shellfish, and spearfishing while Jon pilots the craft, keeping watch for sharks.   As members of the Red Pineapple Corps, The Red Wench has been recruited for search and rescue operations and disaster relief throughout her ownership and operation by Jon and Asher Burman. The ship will occasionally be used for coastal patrols looking for surfers and swimmers carried out by riptides, or for missing persons.

Propulsion

The ship, like most traditional canoes, is powered by wind via her sails. The Red Wench is also equip with a small fuel engine in case of emergency or lack of winds, as per local regulations in Shanai itself, though it is rarely used. On occasion, when Asher Burman is aboard, he will occasionally push the boat himself, especially in shallow waters.

Weapons & Armament

As the boat is primarily used for fishing, it is stocked with a speargun, mid-range harpoon, and a variety of fishing tools that can also be used as weapons if deemed necessary. Jon also keeps a baseball bat underneath the captain's seat.
