Cultist Profession in Reason's End | World Anvil

Cultist

Cultists are the second most common still-human category of the Initiates. They are people (sometimes former mages, sometimes not) that have ended up beginning to worship Powers in exchange for magical power and influence.   As a result, rather than attempting to avoid the attention of Powers while stealing bits of their magical power (in the form of spells), cultists are actively attempting to gather the attention in order to receive Gifts, which might be either supernatural proficiency in activities connected to their patron's domain, reshaping of their body and mind, and certain forms of active magical powers.   The cults are varied. Some of them are beneficial, some of them are among the most dangerous human-origin threats that one can encounter. Even cults of the same Power can be scattered all around the spectrum. Primarily it depends on how advanced the cult is - the higher the level of Attention, the more warped their perception and more altered their behaviour is.   Weaker cults can maintain certain degree of stability. Some stronger ones - rarely - can achieve that as well, although this depends entirely on their doctrine and strength of will of their participants. It has been noted that cults that push the sufficiently 'detached' cultists away from managerial position (letting them focus on more 'supernatural' things than mundane stuff like recruitment) tend to last longer.

Career Progression

Most cults have their own internal ranking, depending on their personal doctrine. In general, though, the higher you go, the more dangerous the cultists. The most dangerous of them tend to breach the line separating cultists and heresiarchs, achieving a full and comprehensive recreation of existence, while also being permanently locked to a highest possible level of attention. Heresiarchs are a terrifying threat to combat.

Operations

Provided Services

Cults are vastly varied internally, especially between the Powers (although even cults of the same Power can be very different). Most of them maintain their attention by working in a way that pleases their elder god overlord. An example can be Cults of Flesh often masquerading as tattoo parlours or a clinic specializing in plastic surgery. Those jobs also tend to serve as a way of maintain themselves financially.

Dangers & Hazards

The problem with the cults is that the rising level of Attention causes progressive warping of one's perception of the world, their senses and even their way of thinking and body. This is much more pronounced than random mutations that sometimes befell mages. Side effect of that is typically taking a mindset akin to many supernatural beings, one best summarized as 'more of my domain = good, less of it = bad'. As a result, it's very easy to fall off the deep end and proceed to go completely and dangerously insane.
