Spellcatch Flask
Very Rare – Arcane Capture & Recast Tool
Function:
The Spellcatch Flask is an enchanted alchemical vessel designed to intercept and trap a spell being cast nearby in real time. Once sealed, the spell can be thrown like a grenade, unleashing the captured magic at will.
How It Works – Step by Step
1. Reaction Capture
- When a creature casts a 2nd-level spell or lower within 60 feet, the bearer may use their reaction to attempt to absorb it into the flask.
- The bearer must immediately make a DC 15 Arcana check.
On Success: The spell is completely nullified, and the Spellcatch Flask absorbs the spell. The original caster loses the slot as if it were cast normally.
On Failure: The spell proceeds as intended, and the flask becomes cracked and unusable.
2. Stored State
Once successfully captured:
- The potion liquid takes on the color and behavior of the spell's essence (fire swirls, static arcs, shimmering illusions, etc.).
- A faint whisper of the spell's verbal components can be heard when held close.
- The flask hums gently, vibrating with stored energy.
- The spell must be used within 48 hours, or the bottle explodes harmlessly with a flash of light and a puff of sulfur-scented smoke.
3. Throw & Release
- As an action, the user may throw the flask (range: 30 ft).
- Upon shattering, the stored spell is cast instantly:
- If the spell affects an area, it centers at the point of impact.
- If the spell requires a target, it locks onto the nearest valid creature within 10 ft of the shatter point.
- Spells cast this way require no components.
- Spell save DC = 13 (or the original caster’s, if known).
Limitations
- Can only hold one spell at a time.
- Only works on 2nd-level or lower non-ritual spells.
- Cannot absorb or store Concentration spells.
- Flask is destroyed upon use.
- Magic can be dispelled with Dispel Magic or similar.
Design Description
The Spellcatch Flask is a short round-bellied glass bottle encased in twisting golden-brown arcane roots, like vines of magic restraining wild energy. The glass glows faintly even when empty.
The liquid inside is clear until a spell is captured—then it glows and pulses with the color and energy of the trapped spell.
The cap is metallic, reinforced with enchantments and faint runes. The bottle gives off a gentle magical hum, like a held breath of power.
Even empty, it feels like it's waiting for something.
