Avskildhet (Av-skilled-het)

This perfectly circular landmass that at one point housed the attempted Neohuman country of Freedom, is now a bizarre wilderness divided into fiefdoms under the control of various Neohuman warlords. The one exception is the Plinth, a great tower (4000m tall and 10 km in diameter) at the exact center of the Avskildhet, built of extradimensional materials, that is the meeting place and archive for the Stability Committee.   Created in 1965 by the Stability Committee to house the Plith in neutral territory, Avskildhet became a sanctuary for those Neohumans that had trouble integrating wherever they were.  The Stability Committee has made it known to all on the island that as long as the Plinth is inviolate, they would not interfere with those who chose to make the island their home.       The island is surrounded by a tight sargasso of currents that slowly spin the floating island at a single rotation per full day. These currents are in a tight configuration that would be impossible without Neohuman or mystical influence and are strong enough to make navigation to the island by ship very difficult.   As one might imagine, this has resulted in a volatile history over the last 45 years. Due to the presence of such a huge variety of Neohumans and Neoanimals, the flora and fauna of the island can hardly be considered natural.  The surface of the island is covered in rain forest like flora nad a robust web of fauna. Many of the species, both plant and animal, are unique to island or appear to be species previously thought extinct. Some of the most notable of these are the many species that are nearly identical to dinosaurs as depicted by media in the early 60s and those that resemble the more modern understanding of dinosaurs. Subsequent explorations of other dimensions and realities have found very similar examples there, which has fueled speculation that the island was amalgamated from elsewhere as opposed to being created out of whole cloth by the Stability Committee.   One of the first attempts at organization and governmental formation was under the auspices of Sovereign Gold, one of the leaders of the Neohuman separation movement.  She founded Sanctum, both the city and the nation, and extended an open invitation to all Neohumans to migrate there.  For the first few years, the population of the island blossomed, but as it became apparent that the number of newborn Neohumans was only increasing, the ideals of the separatist movement became more and more far-fetched.  Sovereign Gold was assassinated in 1969.  The Learned League assumed control of Sanctum, although the seeds of dissention were already sown amongst the citizenry.  By the time 1977 when the UN passed the Neohuman Recognition Accord, more than half of the residents had already vacated the island for other countries and those that were left were wracked with infighting and power struggles.  The Learned League disbanded in early 1978 and with that the government of Sanctum collapsed completely.   True to their word, the Stability Committee has done nothing to help or hinder the people of Sanctum.  Since the collapse of the government, most people have fled the island for more stable areas. Those that have remained seemed embroiled in ever-shifting bands of Neohumans constantly fighting with each other.  There has been little consistent contact with  the people of Sanctum since the early 1980s, although travel to and from the island is unrestricted.
