Clash of Champions

The battle between all the guilds that led to the founding of The Guildpact.   The various organizations that would later become the guilds of Ravnica had been quietly competing with each other for control of important areas of the fledgling city of Ravnica. Aiming to secure access to vital resources or strategic positions, the factions began turning to violence more and more frequently. Traveling in various areas of the city without the blessing of the faction controlling them became a death sentence.   The specific event that heightened the conflict into open warfare has been lost to the passage of time, and is a matter of conjecture among Ravnican historians. But what is known is that each of the factions rallied their strongest warriors and mages and met at the foot of Mount Rakka, the dormant volcano around which much of the city had been built. There, a loose alliance formed between the forces of order and the forces of chaos. The Azorius, the Boros, the Selesnya, the Simic, and the Izzet all aligned with order; the Gruul, the Golgari, and the Rakdos aligned with chaos. The Orzhov are reported to have fought on both sides in different areas of the conflict, and many smaller factions threw their lots in with one side or the other.   The battle raged for many days, coming to a climax when Razia, leader of the Boros, descended to battle Cisarzim, mightiest of the Gruul, in direct combat. Their struggle destroyed entire city blocks, causing widespread fire and devastation. Neither could gain the upper hand.   Azor, leader of the Azorius, had grown weary of the ceaseless bloodshed, worrying that it would continue until the entire world had been destroyed. He and some of his strongest lawmages had retired from the battle, fortifying themselves around Vitu-Ghazi, which the Selesnyans were desperately defending to protect Mat'Selesnya, the Worldsoul. Azor beckoned other powerful leaders to meet him there under a flag of truce, including Niv-Mizzet, Svogthir, and the Obzedat. He proposed a unique and lasting peace accord, infused with eternal magics, and one by one he secured their agreement.   Leaving the sanctuary of the great tree, Azor crossed the battlefield and descended from the heavens, setting himself between the warring Razia and Cisarzim. He presented them with The Guildpact, explaining to them how it would allow the factions to continue their battles without inflicting such grievous destruction and loss. Begrudgingly, the two belligerents agreed to end their battle and sign the accord on behalf of their factions. With most of the combatants laying down their arms, the demon Rakdos lamented the end of his entertainment; with his signature, the Clash of Champions ended, and the reconstruction of the city began.
