Tataran Matriachy

Feared and despised by the rest of Atane, the Tataran Matriachy is a society of Tieflings that appears alien to the very few who ever visit the Tataran Isles.

Structure

The nine great houses dominate all aspects of life on the Tataran Isles. Each house is led by a Matriach who represents the interests of that house on the Council of Matriachs, the chief governing body of the Matriachy. The Council elects one of its members to serve as the Great Matriach for a three year term to run the day to day affairs of the Matriachy.   As a matriarchy females are the dominant gender in the isles and an individuals status is determined in relation to their female relations.

Public Agenda

The public agenda of the Matriachy is shrouded in secrecy. Because of their relative alieness the tiefling diaspora is feared and distrusted throughout Atane.

History

When Hadia ruled the continent, were not an uncommon sight across the continent and prized for knowledge of magic.   In the wake of the collapse, the Tiefling home land of Tatarus was devastated and broken up into an archipelago. Life as it was on the remaining Tataran Isles was radically altered. Where trees once dominated the landscape of Tatarus, large fungi started to grow in the dead soil that remained.   As tiefling society was on its knees, the first council of Matriachs met and established the city of Hell. The families of those first matriachs would form the basis of the great houses of the modern era.

Demography and Population

Tieflings are the only recognised citizens of the Matriachy. Very few members of the other races visit Hell or its surrounds.

Technological Level

Due to the lack of fresh water, the Tieflings have learnt to use a type of mushroom that grows on their islands as a means to desalinate salt water.

Foreign Relations

The Tataran Matriachy avoids openly engaging with the other realms of Atane.

Agriculture & Industry

Scarred by the Collapse, not vegetation grows on the Tartaran Isles. Instead fungi forests now dominate. The Tieflings have adapted and learnt how to farm fungus for their sustenance. Because large domesticated animals such as cattle or goats have difficulty eating fungus Tieflings have become functional vegetarians.

Trade & Transport

Because of the scattered nature of the Isles very few roads exist. Most communities are coastal and rely on small vessels to travel and trade with other villages and Hell.

Education

Tiefling Women born into one of the great houses can expect to receive an education preparing them for their role as leaders of the Matriachy. Due to their inherent magical abilities most have some basic knowledge of spell casting, with the most adept being sent to College of Bruja to learn the finer magical arts.   Most Tiefling men born into the great houses are taught domestic skills to prepare for their role of preparing the next generation of their House. A few are taught the ways of war to serve and protect the Matriarchy from any threats that might threaten it.

Infrastructure

Instead of building their buildings out of stone or wood as is common on Atane, the Tieflings have learnt how to use the giant mushrooms that populate their land to build large and intricate structures.   Hell is a stands testament to the Tiefling's skill with fungi construction with a sophisticated network of roads, public and private buildings and great aqueducts bringing fresh water to the city.
