Open Seas Encounters
Good Encounters- 7-8
- Find a favorable breeze, take 1 day off travel time.
- Meet with the bronze dragon Ildren, who is summoned by a particularly skilled sailor singing sea shanties and wants to enjoy the music.
- A pod of whales/dolphins begin following the ship.
- Pass within sight of a friendly merchant ship, possibility for conversation/flag signals, warning of future storms or other dangers ahead.
- Find a wrecked ship, possible treasure as well as danger. Haunted?
- light storm, delays ship and possibly damages it. Skill check, DC 15.
- Hags (Green, night, sea)- CR 3, 5, 2. Hag covens. VG pg 159. MM pg
- Banderhobb- Cr 5. Creation of hags, large frog like creature, blindly follows their masters orders regardless of any harm done to them. VG pg 122.
- Giant Shark- CR 5
- Harpy’s- CR 1, charming singers, collectors of things, sadistic cowards. MM pg 181.
- Merrow- CR 2, evil and corrupted Merfolk, creatures that crave chaos and death, might align themselves with a kraken. MM pg 219.
- Sahugin- ½-5, live in deep ocean trenches but come to shallower water to hunt and raid, hate sea elves. MM pg 263.
- Ecnounter a pirate/orcish/Somick raiding ship, depending on location.
- Heavy Storm- delays ship by several days, skill challenge DC 18 to prevent heavy damage that would need to be repaired, possibly have to make port early to do so.
- Hydra- CR 8, water dweller in lakes rivers and large ponds, ravenous hunger that drives it to new territories when food is scarce, grows new heads when chopped off. MM pg 190.
- Sea Serpents- CR 8, 14. Beastial and territorial, sink ships that pass through their territory. FTD pg 219.
- Dragon Turtle- CR 24, 17, 10, 4. underwater treasure collector, can be bought off or bribed, ancient dragon turtles can be as large as an island, and can sleep for decades floating on the surface easily mistaken for an island. MM pg 119, FTD pg 191.
- Kraken (possibly sinks ship) CR 23, plot device, the water turns inky black around it, may have worshipers. MM pg 196.
- Hurricane- a ship killer storm that will heavilly damage the ship, possibly sending it ashore for repairs. Skill challenge DC 20, if they fail the majority of checks then the ship is wrecked and sinks, athletic/survival check to not drown. Wash ashore on the nearest landmass.
