Subtleflower

Properties

Material Characteristics

Subtleflower is a vine-growing, flowering psychite plant found rarely in tropical and subtropical environments, or otherwise, in places of high magical prominence (particularly near leylines).

Physical & Chemical Properties

The flower is unique in many different ways. Firstly, the plant necessitates arcane energy above all else to grow. It draws in magical energy over an extended period of time, until eventually, the plant becomes infused with enough energy equivalent 5th level magical spellcasting. If the plant receives too much arcane energy at once, it wilts and dies; if the plant receives too little arcane energy, it becomes dormant and cease flowering. This makes the plant naturally difficult for botanists to grow, and is much easier found foraging.   Subtleflower is most frequently seen in places of high magic. This can be near portals to other planes, near Elvish settlements, deep within forests or places of nature, or near places of magical accidents or magical leylines. Leylines are the most reliable locations where these are found, as either the act of seeking out Subtleflower or the act of seeking out the location of a leylines emergence tend to lead one to the discovery of the other.    The magical essence of this plant is stored in the flower bulbs. Once the bulb is taken or snipped, it will hold its arcane energy for approximately 7 days unless appropriately dried. Drying the flower allows it to maintain its arcane energy for about six months at most, degrading monthly until it loses all its properties. A fully degraded flower bulb will appear grey in color and shriveled.   The properties of subtleflower are enhanced under two primary conditions: when the dried petals are infused further with arcane energy, or when they are smoked and further dried with the use of a magical flower.

History & Usage

History

Subtleflower is a plant that was original invasive, but is now semi-native to Rakuen. It was said to originally grow on Acrisia, where it grows prominently in the deeply magical area and soils. At some point, visitors from Acrisia are said to have distributed the plant or seedlings of the plant to Rakuen, which has resulted in the plant taking root on the planet.   Subtleflower has been used throughout history, particularly by shamanistic, druidic, and arcane individuals. It is particularly valued in communal tribes, where difficult decisions need to be made, and where verbal conversation does not suit the intensity of discussions due to natural miscommunications. Cultivated primarily by druids, it is also sought after by mages who find value in its magical properties.

Everyday use

Subtleflower has a fairly singular use: when the petals are burnt as an insence, all those that in hale the smoke begin to share consciousness as seen with the Telepathy spell. This effect is more immediate than the Telepathy spell, and more flexible, allowing for individuals to travel within different individuals conscious and subconscious minds, removing ego-barriers that would normally disallow individuals to seek these visions out within another.    In a controlled setting, this can allow individuals to witness historical memories, relive memorized conversations, and also experience and relive past emotions from an individual. Examples of a usage would be using subtleleaf between an elder and a student, so as to teach the student an act that is extremely difficult to teach in reality (such as an intricate ritual, locating a remembered place, or recounting potentially forgotten lore). More casually, the drug is often used in a romantic and spiritual context, allowing the consumers to share jubilation, happiness, euphoria, or passion with one another simultaneously without any barriers of humanoid flesh to block off sensation.

Hazards

The major hazard of subtleflower is the setting that it is used in. In a controlled setting, subtleflower is generally seen as completely harmless.    In an uncontrolled setting, however, subtleflower can induce panic, anxiety, fear, and other chaotic emotions in the users. Although individuals experience pure stream of consciousness is a natural process for all individuals, this is usually contained within ones own mind. The destruction of ego-barriers in multiple individuals simultaneously can be traumatic at times for users who are not prepared for this result. Individuals may relive feelings or sensations that a person might otherwise not want or intend to share (for instance, a horrific injury, death of a family member, or other emergency or tragedy). The emotions of these thoughts and memories will flood into all parties who are currently high on the substance. If an individual felt extreme rage at the death of a soldier on a battlefield, and that memory were relieved, that emotion would be passed to the individual who experienced it, and if they are not able to control it, that can act memetically, spreading to the entire group until all are experiencing the same emotion.    To prevent this, subtleflower diviners are often contracted to lead the ritual. These are experts who have imbibed subtleflower many times, and have used their time under the influence to learn to control the group's collective psyche, allowing a more directed experience that flows with consent practices and safety. If negative emotions begin to spread among a group, it can also be subsided by a subtleflower diviner. In example, if an individual remembers a horrifying experience of a spider where they panicked, the diviner can help calm the group, remind them that the memory and emotion is not real, and attempt to either explain the memory as it occurs, or otherwise shift the experience to a safer space.
