History & Usage

History

Invention of Nectar is not well documented. It is known to be feywild in origin, and was created by an Eladrinn sometime during the First Halcyon. The great mage was said, although without historical documentation or evidence, to have been created from failed alchemical experiments. Nectar was largely distributed among nobility in the feywild, with a strict prohibition of the narcotic upon the prime material plane.   However, whatever recipe may have existed were lost to time at the end of the  First Halcyon and the sealing of The Dirge. Additionally, with the faltering strength of the elves, the prohibition was lifted, causing a flood of the drugs upon the Prime Material. The popularity of the drug, particularly in bardic circles, made demand for the drug slowly skyrocket. Since there was no method to gain new supply, Humans resorted to reverse-engineering the substance to the best of their ability using, using a mixture of many of its central components: namely psychoid leaves, anima grass, ambrosia and bryolux.   It wasn't until the Second Halcyon that elves began to look into their ancient creation, and try to divine the magical nature. It was thus discovered by the historical enchanter Avicenna what the key spells cast during both the brewing and enchanting cycle. These discoveries allowed the further proliferation of a drug, although modern variants were vastly stronger in strength and effect than the counterparts developed without the magical elements included, trending the drug to its more original qualities.

Everyday use

Nectar is an aphrodisiac, which is injected via a syringe. Although the substance can be consumed, the effects are limited, especially those with low psychic sensitivity or high magical sensitivity. It is not recommended to use the substance orally unless the combination of the material is included in some manner of magical enchantment, as the intended effects are greatly reduced.   When injected, Nectar floods the neural pathways of an individual, with a specific goal of heightening pleasure centers in the brain. It particularly targets erogenous sensations, making acts of physical affection and sexual pleasure infinitely more arousing than someone who is not consuming the drug.

Cultural Significance and Usage

Nectar is most popular among Elves, particularly among the nobility. The rare and valuable substance is both seen as an item of luxurious opulence, and also one of blissful abandon to ones more core, carnal natures. The drug is also popular with religious cults who are hedonist in nature, allowing them to fully explore they expanses of their physical connections with one another in worship toward their deities. Although commoners sometimes partake in the drug, this is usually done in large groups to help aid in driving down the cost of Nectar, or otherwise, is seen as a rare and exotic treat.

Hazards

The first and most obvious hazard of Nectar is the usage of low-purity Nectar. Although this will often produce the same effects as normal-purity Nectar, intaking lower-purity material can result in various hangover effects, including: lack of sensation of touch, extreme onset depression and suicidal ideation, and panic attacks. This begins a cycle of addiction for the individual, as the only way to experience nay of these simple forms of pleasure it to intake more of the drug. This is why, broadly speaking, the drug is kept legal, as regulation of high-purity Nectar insures that people are not starting on a cycle of addition by consuming illicit Nectar.   The second and less obvious major hazard is the tendency for a development of depression and depressive tendencies. Although high-purity Nectar does not carry with it the dangerous addictive tendencies and seriously neurological and physiological side effects, the high levels of euphoria delivered by the drug can make some individuals obsessive and addicted to the substance. These users purport that life begins to feel secondary to the remarkable sensations while high on Nectar. This gives the perception that the best space to live in is one where they are high on Nectar, and that the periods in-between a high are seen as a grey middle zone of sobriety.   The final hazard with the usage of Nectar is dubbed "arcane fog." The high levels of magic that is contained within a dosage of Nectar that allows it to maintain its remarkable effects also has the risk of continued usage for magical individuals. This is critical for elvish and gnomish users, but also to arcane casters in particular. The development of arcane fog will begin to leach the magical strength from the individual, making their spellcasting weaker, and potentially even dappening their abilities altogether. In the most serious cases, it can lead to arcane dullness, which can result in an individual losing all magical abilities, both natural and controlled. For Elves and Gnomes, arcane dullness and arcane insensitivity can lead to death without arcane medical treatments; for other races, it can lead to a complete loss of arcane ability of any kind, including the wielding of magical weaponry. Coincidentally, some warriors throughout history have used large dosages of Nectar to initiate arcane dullness to make them immune to magical charms and magical interaction.

Distribution

Trade & Market

Nectar is typically sold by dispensaries. These are regulated directly by the state, are are forced to adhere to many government oversights and inspections. Nectar is also frequently found on the black market, as dispensaries often see that they can get an illicit markup by selling to nefarious traders at a premium, so that they can in turn sell it in the black market for an additional profit.
