Manannan Mac Lir

The Old god of the oceans and sea creatures, Manannan Mac Lir is a primordial force of nature closely associated with the Terrasic Ocean, storms, and the heroes of old Gwenydd.  A stern and giant being, Manannan Mac Lir is the fury of the ocean, the rhythm of the tides, and the stubborness of  a wave personified into a single creature.   Amongst the earliest of the Old Gods, Mananan Mac Lir has been long worshipped by the humans of western Prima Terra from Ancient Tumbria to Altruscia. In Gwenyddian tradition, Manannan Mac Lir also doubles as a forge god, being credited with the creation of many mythical items in Gwenyddian legend.

Creation

In the Gwenyddian cycle, the oldest of the Old God mythologies, Manannan Mac Lir was the second god to be created when the world was formed. Suceeding The Daghda, who brought life and land, in the deepest canyons and valleys water flowed from the otherworld and drowned the deepest crevices of creation. As the water poured, its spirit took form into Manannan Mac Lir as the first storm. The Trench of Creation, a deep underwater rift between the Bay of Gwennydd and the North Terrasic Ocean, is supposidly the point at which the god first took form.   Having being birthed in as a storm, Mannanan Mac Lir was entreated by The Daghda, who battled through the waters to speak to his new brother. Mac Lir listened to the pleading of The Daghda, who asked for the water to stop lest the new world that was born be drowned and no life could take place. Mac Lir respected the wishes of his elder, and stopped the waters rising anymore.

Arrival of New Gods

As creation continued to expand, the Daghda entreated with Manannan to seed the oceans with the first life. Sea creatures, such as sharks, whales, fish, merfolk and fishfolk were created deep within the sea. Mac Lir also met with Deep Sashelas, a member of the Seldarine, the elven or 'fairy spirits' and the two split the oceans peacefully between them, creating the various oceans, bays, seas, and rivers. Between them, the Elder Seafolk were born. The King of Sharks, the Queen of Kelp, the Jester of the Fishfolk, the Lord of the boneless fish, and Sinead of the Seas.   Next came Bellenus, the god of the sun, with the sun came new life, and with that new life came the Morrigan, death itself. The Sun continued to shine at all times over creation, and although its heat let life on land flourish, the seas and oceans began to dry. As many sea creatures died from the heat, the Morrigan claiming their souls. The death was so rapid and sudden, Sinead, princess of the seas and daugther of Mac Lir, wept so sorrowfully for remorse the waters themselves became full of salt.   Furious with the other gods, Mac Lir demanded the sun be extinguished and the battle between sun and sea waged as the land was flooded and dried on an endless loop. Seeking peace, The Daghda called forth the other spirits and gods of the world. The Fairy King, Corellon, proposed that the sun share the sky with another, turning in rotation so the oceans would not dry, but life on land could still thrive beneath its rays. Agreeing to this proposal, Mac Lir helped to birth the moon with the fairy Sheanie Moonbow, and vowed to follow its journey through the heavens, thus creating the tides.

Breaking of the Court

For thousands of years, the oceans lived in harmony. Manannan's first creations, the court of the sea, ruled over various aspects of sea life on their creator's behalf as part of the peace between Mac Lir and Deep Sashelas. When Mac Lir returned to his divine plane within the realms of water, a dark spirit from the shadoworld crept through a rift in the sea. The spirit approached members of the court to tempt them away from Mac Lir and divide the oceans.   First the spirit approached Sinead, tempting her with powers and prestige equal to her creator. Ever loyal, Sinead turned refused, vowing to stand by her father. Next, the spirit approached the Queen of Kelp, arguing that she deserved a higher status, for without her vegetation, nothign else in the seas could survive, so should she not have the rank and power to reflect that? The queen pondered his words, and simply said, "all must have its order, all must have its place." Finally, the spirit spoke to the King of Sharks. He told the king that the sharks were the most powerful of the seafolk! Their place should be as king of the whole oceans! For their strength cannot be equalled. The king pondered, and after three nights, during which the dark fey poured visions and dreams of his rise as a god into his head, the king accepted, asking what he must do to achieve this.   The spirit told the King he must go to Mac Lir's realm and steel his broach, a magical silver ornament that constantly sang the song of the seas. So the king swam deep into the ocean and through the gates to Mac Lir's realm. Finding the god asleep, he approached his throne room where he found Princess Sinead waiting for him. She begged the king not to turn on Mac Lir and break the peace of the oceans, saying she knew the dark fey would want him to steal power from her father's vaults. For a moment, the king did hestitate and considered turning away, but the visions and dreams of power had corrupted him, so he struck Sinead down, biting her in two.   He took the broach and returned to the seas where he found the dark fey, who instructed him to forever wear it and he would control the ocean. As he did, the court was broken, as the jester of the fishfolk bowed to the king in homage, the queen of kelp did hide in her depths, and lord of boneless fish fled to warn his god. When Mac Lir found his daugther murdered and the song of the sea stolen, he made an eternal oath to destroy the King of Sharks and cast him and all who follow him out from his realm.   Hubris and delusion on his side, the king tried to face mac lir, demanding the god leave the seas to him instead. As lawful vengeance for the murder of his beloved daughter, Mac Lir swirlled a mighty wave around the king, and cast him from the seas onto land, where he dried (and died) in the light of Bellenus. He then cast all sharks and fishfolk from his realm, vowing eternal emnity.

War with the Formorians

In Gwenyddian tradition, when the giants of Krowethia broke the treaty of the Groves, the Old Gods swore to destroy the giant empire and divide them so they would never rise again. During this war, Mac Lir formed armour for the gods and took his first Avatar, Lurcan Mac Mananan. Lurcan wielded a golden sword which could cast the tempest of the first storm upon all those it struck. Mac Lir is also credited with drowning the great Krowethic fleet at sea, and chaining the bodies of the captains to the bottom of the Neapian Channel.

Aoife the Sea Crane

In first age Gwenydd, along the coast their lived a beautiful woman named Aoife, who was being courted by the son of the chieftain of her village. The chieftain, named Ilbhreac, was also being pursued by a prideful witch named Luchra. Aoife's charm and sweetness was winning the cheiftain over, and Lurcan, growing jealous, cast a curse on Aoife, turning her into a crane in a spell to last 200 years. The villagers, not recognising it was Aoife, saught to slaughter the crane, forcing her to fly deep into the ocean.   Resting on the sea, Aoife cried and wept. From the depths arose Mac Lir, who used his powers to speak to her, and learnt her story. The two talked and shared stories, Aoife's wit and charm impressing the ocean god. When dawn finally rose, Mac Lir promised Aoife eternal happiness and joy in the otherworld. The crane accepted, but asked the god what would happen to Lurcha. Mac Lir said, "The treasure of your soul is what she envied, and it is that treasure that shall lead her to the depths." Aoife's mortal body was slain, and her soul granted eternal peace in the otherworld full of joy and song and all of life's wishes.   From the body of the crane, Mac Lir created a bag. He scoured the oceans depths for shipwrecks and filled the bag with all the treasures and pearls he could find. Placing an enchantment on the bag, whenever the tide was high the bag would appear full, and when it was low it would look empty. He then placed the bage near Lorcha and Aoife's village, and lurked in the sea below.   Spotting the crane bag, Lorcha laughed, knowing her rival had finally died. Then, as the tide rose, she spotted the gleaming treasures and pearls within. She trod out to sea, where Mac Lir grabbed her legs, drowning her and casting her to the darkest deeps of his realm for all eternity. The Crane bag was left to roam the oceans, with legend saying it is accesible at high tide on the solsitce nights, and those that find and reach it will find a gift from Aoife, the sea crane.

Divine Goals & Aspirations

Outside of his war on the Shark King and his followers, Mac Lir is an illusive god. In myth and legend, he is known to have a soft spot for those who are lost and full of sorrow. His warlocks can also be found throughout the world, usually as the form of sailors who drowned at sea and were rescued by him. As repayment, they are given vague tasks to complete missions around the world as part of detailed deals and contracts - with some even beign restored to life upon the completion of their pact. Olivir and Azura are known warlocks of Mac Lir. The former having been rescued from the wreckage of the Corrupted Fortune and accepting to save the life his father, Captain Vand. The latter accepted the deal to get Olivir out of danger.
