The Watchcliff
"Eyes on the Horizon"
The Watchcliff is Grainhold’s first line of defense, with its towers offering unparalleled views of the surrounding hills and plains. The prison is known for its unique preventative device, designed by a legendary artificer, one of the first of his kind, Kardinal Krimple. The small device is inserted into the skin of every inmate. If they leave the confines of the prison without a Magewarden, their entire body glows a light visible up to a mile away.
The Prison Mines
"Dark Depths"
Once a working quarry, the mines beneath Grainhold now serve as cells for the most dangerous criminals, their labyrinthine passages ensuring no easy escape. Debates have erupted about reopening the mines to utilise the prison labour, but many devotees of Lera decry the use of prison labour.
Life in Grainhold
"Duty Above All"
The personnel at Grainhold live a disciplined and isolated life, bound by strict routines and a shared commitment to justice. The isolation does cause tension, and Warden Steelhelm tries to rotate guards out on leave regularly to maintain morale, particularly during Parade seasons.
Supply Challenges
"The Lifeline of the Fortress"
Regular supply shipments are vital to Grainhold’s operations, bringing food, medicine, and equipment to the isolated prison. The hilly terrain offers no direct route, only secretly kept routes through the hills themselves. Despite this security, most escape attempts occur during these deliveries.
