Veil-Touched

Sometimes, a piece of a person gets caught between worlds. Whether by returning suddenly from death, or by some strange accident of birth, or by falling through the cracks between the realms and getting trapped in the shadowy un-reality for an ageless time, every now and again a creature becomes permanently marked by The Veil. These Veil-Touched, as they are called by scholars, have the unique and burdensome capacity to sense the boundary between worlds. The veil is usually hard to perceive; it retreats from the presence of rational thought simply by virtue of being undefinable, and the observation of it usually pushes it out of reach.
But something is different in the minds of the Veil-Touched. Some thread of that empty space stays within them. And so they can feel this place of shadows that presses against the world, and even interact with it, pulling and rippling the membrane, often without even realizing it. With training, guidance, and time, they may learn how to master this interaction and perception.
Left alone and without guidance, though, Veil-touched individuals are a danger to themselves and others. Their sight in to the veil comes sporadically and without context, and is often attributed to hallucination or madness. In times of high stress or emotion, they may pull upon the fabric of the veil without knowing it, causing strange effects around them or, at worst, tearing the veil or attracting the attention of the Remnants.
