Ajil

Martes adjilia (djillunka in the Feywilds, sometimes referred to as the fey sable), known as Ajil, is a Feywild equivalent of the sable species in the material plane. Thave strong magical abilities. Aside from being immune to non-magical weapons, they are quite agile, letting them run away from any danger that may threaten them. Their dexterous nature comes from their most well-known magical boon - their speed magic. Used by many Archfeys and Feywild nobility as messengers, they can either move themselves at (by material plane standards) incredible speeds, or help creatures in their proximity by boosting their speed. They are now mostly associated on the material plane with the Swift Sables guild.

Bonding. The Ajil can magically bond with one creature it can see, immediately after spending at least 1 hour observing that creature while within 30 feet of it. The bond lasts until the Ajil bonds with a different creature or until the bonded creature dies. While bonded, the bonded creature can telepathically communicate with the Ajil - the fey creature won't respond back, but it will understand basic commands.
Ajil's aid. The Ajil's swiftness is not exclusive to the little creature. When bonded with another creature, it can passively boost it's speed by around 30%.

Fey message-bearers

As a species originating from the Feywilds, these little fur balls have been consistently used as speedy servants by the Fey nobility. At first kept for their cuteness, the Fey have quickly realised how useful their speed is, along with the lack of resistance, unlike fellow fairy-like peers and underlings. They have been delivering fairy messages since then.

One of the reasons Ajiles may have made it onto the material plane claims it was out of friendship - a pixie befriending a gnome and, wishing to keep in touch, gave her an Ajil to send messages by. However it may have occurred, Ajiles are no longer only in the Feywilds, but settle down in the material plane as well.

Ruin-Keepers

Another theory on how the Ajil came to live on the material plane is linked to ancient portals, scattered all across R'Ondell. These portals served in times long past as gateways between the two worlds, but as the natural connection between the planes shattered, so did the portals. Now, overgrown and broken, they are often guarded by spirits of beings too powerful or too weak to live, but in some cases, that couldn't be further from the truth!

In some parts of the world, the creatures left behind were animals like the Ajiles, and these? Well, they simply adapted to their new life on the material plane. Not wanting to leave their familiar home however, they kept to the ruins of passages long gone, and, once discovered by the world of R'Ondell, were then given the title of ruin-keepers.

Basic Information

Ecology and Habitats

Though the Ajil has over time adapted to life in the material plane, no environment is better for them than the wide, luscious meadows of the Feywilds, like the Clocatea, where it comes from. Its preferred terrain is one it can run around, climb and play in - as skittish as they are, they are playful little creatures.

Dietary Needs and Habits

The Ajiles are carnivores that hunt their food. They feed on many kinds of small rodents and, unlike their material plane counterparts that only hunt snakes while necessary, the Ajiles have adapted to specifically hunt those, earning them a resistance to poison. As companions to the Fairies and Fey of the Fairy courts, who have a specific disdain for serpents as even the weakest of venoms may be fatal, the Ajiles have evolved to hunt snakes down, so now their venom and poison pose next to no threat to the little fuzzy creatures.

If you yourself are an owner of an Ajil, let mealtime be playful - Ajiles quite enjoy chasing after their food!

What might your character know?

Oh wow, what a cute fella! Ajiles are mostly associated with that one messenger guild now, so where they came from and what they do isn't really common knowledge.

But boy oh boy if it isn't just the CUTEST LITTLE FELLER - come here! Come here! Why is it running away!
