Mental characteristics

Personal history

The captain grew up in Hyton until his mother became sick and then Ambury Temple as a ward of the priests there and ended up developing a close relationship with Agnor Mirophel who looked after him like a surrogate father. He never knew his actual father, but was raised until 10 years old by his mother who died of Sewer Sickness after being bitten by a rat. Before she died, his mother took him to the temple and paid a rather significant sum for them to care for him until he turned 18. During those difficult 8 years, Riffin Bardaye learned combat skills and was educated in letters and numbers, history, and several languages. This education directly contributed to his rapid rise through the city guard of Forodost. At 45, he is now the Captain of the Guard in Forodost and charged with protection of the northern border of the Kingdom of Fenlor.

Education

As a ward of the Ambury Temple between age 10 and 18, Riffin received tutoring in physical and mental pursuits.  His primary academic subjects included languages, history, and numbers. Athletically, Riffin learned combat skills with martial weapons from some of the Temple Guard.

Employment

After leaving Ambury Temple in 4454 SR at 18, three years after the Blightsource Crater Explosion,  Riffin traveled aimlessly doing odd jobs to finance his travels. He worked as a translator for a merchant in Penmarst, then as a delivery agent for the city guard in Rhesda, and as a barman for a trendy tavern, The Tossed Cup, in Hyton. Finally, he joined the Fenloran military and was assigned to be a ranger with the Forodost City Guard. Two things led to Riffin's success in the guard: 1) the education he received as a ward of the priests of Ambury Temple, and 2) meeting his future wife Mira who convinced him to give up the bottle. At 45, he is now the Captain of the Guard in Forodost and charged with protection of the northern border of the The Kingdom of Fenlor.

Mental Trauma

Two events in Riffin's life have shaped many of his attitudes:
  1. He never knew his father. He was raised by is mother until he turned 10 years old when she died. Very close to his mother, her death from Sewer Plague (bit by rat) and his subsequent move to Ambury Temple dramatized him and lead to heavy drinking in early adulthood.  He conquered his drinking habit when he met his now wife, Mira, ten years ago.  Since that time, he has shot up through the ranks of the guard.
  2. Two years ago, Riffin's daughter, Lyset (12), and wife, Mira (37), caught a wasting sickness that has left them utterly weak and catatonic. He took them to the priests at Ambury Temple, but no cure has been found. To aleviate his worry and grief, Riffin has thrown himself into work with the Guard and has recently started picking up the bottle again in the evenings when he is alone.

Intellectual Characteristics

Despite a gruff exterior, Riffin is well-educated and is adept at strategy, history, and numbers.  All of which serve him well in his job commanding the Forodost Guard.

Morality & Philosophy

Good, Strictly lawful, honest and straightforward.  Believes in following the rules.  His one source of moral weakness stems from his stick wife and daughter.  He is willing to do less than savory things to save them.
