Description and Use
Arcane Lanterns provide a magical, continuous illumination that does not need to be re-lit or recharged for months or years at a time, depending upon the amount of arcane energy infused into the materials at manufacture. Often, arcane lanterns take the form of a copper cage holding a levitating star-like shaped arrangement of six tear-drop-shaped glass bulbs connected at their tips and covered by a diffusing material to provide even illumination. Suspended from ceilings or mounted on light posts, these lanterns adorn government buildings, the streets of large towns and cities, and the homes of even the moderately wealthy. Small municipalities and the lower classes, however, still rely on oil lamps and candles.
Other Uses
The military division of the FAR Order has found a variety of other uses for these lanterns by tweaking their formulae a little: facility protection (Fireball Lantern), personal defensive mechanisms (Shield Lantern), offensive weapons (Spark Lantern, Firestorm Lantern, Burst Lantern), and troop survivability (Flame Lantern, Moving Roof Lantern, and the Cold Lantern). There is work by the Division of Applied Studies within the FAR Order to, in turn, re-adapt some of the military discoveries for civilian uses. For example, miniaturizing and converting the Cold Lantern to a food conservation system.
