Crafting - Fishing

Sometimes seeking out the best spot on a clear day, casting your line, and pulling in that record breaking fish is all an adventurer could want in a day off. Whether it be to impress the locals, haul in some fish to sell, or look for the biggest fish in the lake to cook up for yourself and your companions, there are many reasons to fish in your down time!   When a sutible source of water such as a pond, lake, or seaside coastline is found, you may attempt to reel in a nearby fish using the following rules. Each fishing attempt takes roughly 1 hour of time.
  • Find the Perfect Spot - Make a Wisdom(Survival) check with DC determined by the DM based on the location you are attempting to fish at. This will determine the highest CR of fish in the area. On a critical success, a nearby fish looks to be glowing with magical energy...
  • How Big a Fish Do I Need... - Decide the CR of the fish you want to try and hook which must be less than or equal to the CR determined above. The CR of the fish also determines its size category for harvesting.
  • Fish Size by CR
    CR 0-2: Tiny
    CR 3-4: Small
    CR 5-7:Medium
    CR 8-12: Large
    CR 13-17: Huge
    CR 18+: Gargantuan
  • Just a Nibble... - Make a Ability(Survival) check with an ability determined by the fishing gear being used, and a DC = 10 + the CR of the fish (rounded down).
  • Bring Her In! - On success, the fish is drawn toward the fisher. If the fisher succeeds the check by 5 or more, the fish suffers one level of exhaustion. If the fisher fails by 5 or more, they lose any bait, lure, net or trap they were using, if they used any for the check.

Fishing Equipment

Specialized fishing equipment can be found in many general shops, or food and animal part vendors, or tools shops. These must be purchased to be used and many modify what Ability score is used with your Survival check when fishing, or provide some other benefit.
Dwarven Tackle Box - 1 gp
This fishing kit of the dwarves contains an iron pulley rod, line crafted from a mix of mithril and adamantium threads, bobbers made of huge, bloated animal stomachs filled with methane, complex, multi-pronged adamantium hooks, iron sinkers, coarse dwarven beard hair lures, and a thick, weighted net.
This kit lets you make a Strength (Survival) check for fishing instead of a Wisdom (Survival) check. If properly braced, the fisherman can reel in an aquatic creature weighing up to 1,000 pounds with the rod!   Elven Fly Rod - 1 sp
A fishing rod normally used to catch fish while still moving. While traveling next to a water source, you can keep a normal pace of movement while harvesting food instead of having to move at a slow pace.   Elven Tackle Box - 1 gp
The common fishing kit of the Elves. It contains a darkwood rod, line crafted from silk worms from the Feywild or spiderwebs from the Underdark, bobbers made of either a wood knot from a friendly treant, quill feathers from birds or a buoyant mushroom cap, Mithril or yew splinter hooks, sinkers of common stones, hawk tail feather or spider legged lures, and a thin net made of either spider webbing or thin, but strong reeds or vines.
This kit lets you make a Dexterity (Survival) check for fishing instead of a Wisdom (Survival) check.   Fillet Knife - 5 sp
A thin, curved knife always makes it easier to remove scales and waste less meat on a fish. You have advantage on Wisdom (Survival) checks when harvesting an aquatic creature for meat/bones/organs/spell components/ etc.   Gnomish Tackle Box - 1 gp
The complex fishing kit is rare, but was crafted with gnomish masterwork. It contains a retractable wooden rod, thin line crafted from silk worms, bobbers made of hollowed out nut acorns, steel hooks of various shapes and sizes for any type of fish, sinkers with magnetic stones, tiny clockwork lures made to look like a wiggling worm or tadpole, a thin, weighted net and an air compressed net launcher.
This kit lets you make an Intelligence (Survival) check for fishing instead of a Wisdom (Survival) check.   Hand Ice Auger - 1 gp
Use a DC 10 Strength (Survival) check to drill a hole into a frozen water surface. This allows ice fishing for 1d10 hours. After that time limit is reached, the hole freezes over and you have to drill a new one.
