Rimebrow Guildsmen

A stubborn group of men, halflings, and enigmatic pale elves resides in the permafrosted reaches of Kupridop. In addition to frequent blizzards and harsh winds, the Queensland district is known for a history of invasive predatory beasts. Citizens here--known collectively as Feradae--are said to be as bitter and cold as the climate they live in. Militia reserves often share responsibilities with huntsmen to help provide for the greater population. However, a select force of trained veterans are famously known for their unwavering defence.
In the first generations of the Feradae archers, fletchers, and laborers collectively considered a better method of warding off larger threats than individually tracking them down. In addition to some erudite individuals these citizens made the foundations of Cem Fera's artillery corps, engineering heavy machinery designed to skewer beasts as large as bison from far distances, and with great accuracy. To this day these professionals maintain an elite guild of watchmen revered by their peers.
This group, known as the Rimebrow, now operate the watchtowers across the county. Only when an individual retires or another tower is commissioned does the guild search for new members, typically seeking the most renowned youthful marksmen, crafters, and intellectuals for their ranks. Were they to accept, initiates were put through a test of staying stationed for nine days and nights with their assigned mentor--the duration of one man's scheduled post. The bitter high winds that buffeted wardens during their watch are the namesake of these weather-tempered experts.
Each tower hosts three specialized ballistae, each operated by a team of three. Shifts are up to twelve hours, depending on given visibility. The sturdy weaponry hosted in these towers gives settlements an effective safe perimeter of half a mile beyond town borders. Surveyor's tools used by the watchmen allow a warning range of up to two miles. Should they spot any threats during scheduled hunting hours citizens are warned via the sound of a brass horn not to tread too far.
