409. The West Church

561 W Main Street

This old wooden church was built in 1801 but has stood empty and sealed for the last 20+ years. In 1878, the congregation voted to merge with the church at the intersection of E Main Street and S Peabody Avenue; this was in part due to the falling size of the congregation. However, another reason—now hushed up—was truly responsible for the wholesale movement.

Rumor:

The West Church is closed and empty now. They say the dead were raising a ruckus down in the crypt of the West Church. A warlock had been interred there, and his evil soul was in agony waiting for its final judgment. So, they closed it up and left the matter to heaven.
