401. The Unvisited Island
In the River, on the westside
Visible from (and to the west of) the West Street bridge, almost no one ever visits this small, uninhabited island. It is low and swampy, and covered with thick undergrowth. On its eastern tip, visible from the bridge, are a series of gray standing stones, covered with green moss. A stone altar slab, also covered in moss, rests in the center of the stones. Some say the stones stood since before the first white settlers arrived on America’s shore.
Every so often a group of students or otherwise bored youths attempt to swim or use a boat to get to the island, but its main interest is to historians and those interested in the occult who occasionally make a visit to ponder the use and relevance of the stones and the altar.
Rumor:
I reckon the police are keeping an eye on that lonely island out in the river since that student trouble. Nothing good ever happens there. They say old Keziah Mason used to go there for her potions.Historical
There are charges pending against a group of MU students accused of “reckless endangerment and animal cruelty,” who engaged in unlawful behavior on the island in what is believed to have been some bizarre fraternity stunt that got way out of hand. The ritualistic and awful incident has been described in the local papers as “un-Christian,” and the whole town expects all those charged to be severely punished and thrown out of the university. The police have stated that dogs and cats were obtained by the students from Cunningham’s Pet Shop {418-A}. Police are withholding the names of the accused and further details concerning the incident.
