Frontier Guard
Despite the many advancements made across the ages, colonising distant worlds, especially those on the outer frontiers of Inhabited Space, still poses many risks to those who would make the journey. It's for this reason that the Frontier Guard, a security force dedicated to ensuring the safety of colonial efforts across the galaxy, was formed. While not an especially large or heavily armed force, the Frontier Guard have been a vital factor in the successful establishment of numerous colonies, from their efforts to protect the peace within the settlements, to providing security for expansion efforts beyond the settled areas.
Composition
Manpower
Typically, the average manpower of the Frontier Guard is between 3,000-5,000 per colony.
Equipment
The Frontier Guard is typically equipped with standard infantry-grade combat armour suited to all environments, though deployments in more extreme environments (arctic, jungle, etc.) would necessitate armour tailored to that particular environment. Additional equipment includes long-distance field communication equipment, medical supplies, and a survival pack containing rations and an emergency flare and beacon.
Weaponry
Members of the Frontier Guard are typically armed with lightweight, maneuverable weaponry, with pistols, SMGs, assault shotguns, and light assault rifles being the standard issue armaments. However, if the danger to thecolony is considered to be especially high (such as particularly hostile wildlife or a high presence of pirate activity in the area), heavier ordnance is authorized, including sniper rifles and armour-piercing rifles, though explosives are strictly prohibited to to the risk they pose of damaging the colonies infrastructure.
Vehicles
Vehicles among the Frontier Guard are limited to light scout vehicles, both land and airborne, and dropships, all focused on rapid deployment.
Structure
The Frontier Guard of a colony are divided into smaller units of 500 (overseen by a Frontier Commander) that are tasked with overseeing a section of the surrounding territory, with a unit of 1,000 (overseen by a Frontier Colonel) that's focused on providing internal security for their colony.
Tactics
Due to the small size of their units, as well as the wide range of environments of environments they are expected to operate in, the Frontier Guard focuses on operating in tightly-knit, mobile units, and to remain flexible in their tactics in order to quickly adapt to rapid changes in battlefield conditions.
Training
Recruits to the Frontier Guard undergo standard physical and firearm training, as well as survival training in a variety of environments.
Logistics
Logistical Support
The Frontier Guard are supported by communications officers to help keep their units in contact, mechanics to keep their equipment and vehicles operational, and medics to treat any sick or injured among their ranks.
