Droids in Proxima Alatheia | World Anvil

Droids

Unlike Androids which many agree are living constructs with a soul and true sentience, droids are still well established as machines. Many droids are programmed for very specific jobs and many have very limited decision making capabilities. There are a few blurred lines with the more complex droids that exhibit more intricate and diverse personalities, but while people may become fond of them treating them like pets or friends, not many would consider them on the same level as Androids or people.

Droids as Crew Members

Droids can function as Crew Members of starships as long as there is room for them. Droids can only take on any role but Captain. Some fighter craft can be upgraded with slots for certain droid classes. Droids can be upgraded to increase their use and base skill bonuses are listed in the table below.

Reprogramming and Updating Droids

Sometimes the party may come across a droid programmed for an enemy group they wish to turn to their side or may need to adjust programming or repair a droid they have discovered. All reprogramming must be done while the droid is inactive (unconscious).

Repair

Repairing a droid takes an Engineering check. The degree of repairs determines the DC.   EASY: DC 8
MODERATE: DC 12
DIFFICULT: DC 16
MANGLED: DC 20
LOST CAUSE: DC 28

Memory Wipe

A memory wipe does not alter any base programming of the droid, but does remove all memory from the unit. This requires 10 minutes and is a DC 14 Computers check. On a failure, the droid is damaged and the memory exists but is fragmented. A succussful memory wipe also clears any preferences and personality from the droid.

Reprogram

Reprogramming a droid can be anything from altering its allegiances to removing the combat protocols from a battle droid to make it a protocol droid. Reprogramming takes 1d4 hours and requires profficiency with either a Slicer's Kit or Programmer's kit. The action requires a Computers check with a DC determined by the DM based on the extent of the reprogrraming.

Droid Personalities and Communication

Droids typically communicate in a serious of beeps and tones known as Binary. Very few creatures understand this language but often utilize protocol droids to translate. Some droids, like protocol droids, are equipped with vocal processing units to communicate in many different languages. Droids who don't recieve recurring memory wipes often develop unique personalities. The table below offers a randomizer for droid personality.
