Plague Wasp Species in Primus Hortus | World Anvil

Plague Wasp

Basic Information

Anatomy

They are distinguished from other vespine wasps by the relatively large abdomen and long stinger, which also functions as an ovipositor. The body is a reddish-brown color like dried blood, and the antennae are longer than the body. Their Wings are clear and are as long as the insect's body. And large serrated mandibles that dig into the flesh of their pry so that they can hold on while stinging them precisely.

Genetics and Reproduction

The species is solitary, spending their adult life alone. They reproduce asexually, targeting humanoids as the host to deposit their eggs. Adults of Languor Vesparum are attracted to warm bipedal active bodies and become increasingly aggresive when they can smell fresh blood. They lay 13–24 eggs per sting using their elongated ovipositor to reach deep into the host tissue, typically aimed at large cavities like the abdomen. Eggs take between one and two days to hatch and will take 20–30 days to reach adulthood. Male parasitoids develop faster than females, emerging two to three days before females from their host. Members of Languor Vesparum are carries of the Con-ev disease, which is transmitted upon being stung and helps to repress the immune system of the host to ensure that the eggs hatch with minimal attack from the host immune system. Once pupa hatch they will begin to devour surrounding soft tissue avoiding critical organs to keep the host alive as long as possible and once the host dies building a nest from the carcass by mixing a coagulation agent into the blood and using it to create a reddish brown husk around the carcass where they will remain in cocoon as they before emerging in their adult form and leaving to seek out host for the next generation.

Dietary Needs and Habits

These wasps are rarely seen consuming any kind of sustenance once they matured, and it's believed that their adult bodies hold most if not all the energy they need to complete their life cycle, however on those rare occasions they have been seen performing the same behavior that they exhibited when they were pupa. If there are corpses about like the scene of a battlefield they can be observed ingesting bits of flesh and blood and making a nest with the husk formed from the coagulated blood. If this happens, the wasp will patrol the area looking for a suitable living host and returning to its nest to eat and rest. This seems to prolonged their life span and has led to an anomaly in their behavior where the solitary predator will end up creating a community as long as the area has sufficient corpses and fresh host wandering through.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

They have bright red compound eyes and segmented antenna similar to other vespa as well as glands near their feet that allow them to smell.
