Samana Cay (sah-mah-nah kee)

Samana Cay, a small island in the Carribean, was purchased by the supervillain known as Overlord and turned into his base of operations. Over the years, Overlord transformed the small island into a technological paradise while maintaining the ecological balance of the island.

Structure

Overlord is the undisputed voice of power on Samana Cay. He has delegated some of the day-to-day administration tasks to Prism and a small handful of trusted aides.

Culture

Most of the island's inhabitants are refugees from other countries, displaced by war, political persecution or natural disasters. Citizens are free to do anything they wish as long as it doesn't interfere with the rights of others or the smooth running of the island. Most spend at least some part of their day maintaining the island and its facilities and natural preservations.

Assets

Overlord's royalties and patents support the island and its inhabitants. There is a small technology industry that manufactures the most advanced computer chips in the world.

History

Samana Cay is an island in the Bahamas believed by some researchers to have been the location of Christopher Columbus's first landfall in the Americas on October 12, 1492. The verdant cay was long uninhabited prior to Overlord's purchase, but figurines, pottery shards, and other artifacts discovered there in the mid-1980s have been ascribed to Lucayan Indians, who lived on the cay around the time of Columbus's voyages.   The indigenous people of the island on which Columbus first landed called it "Guanahani." Samana Cay was first proposed to be Guanahani by Gustavus Fox in 1882, but the predominant theory gives the honor to San Salvador Island. However, in 1986, Joseph Judge of National Geographic Magazine made different calculations based on extracts from Columbus's logs and argued for Samana Cay as the location, but his methodology has also been criticized.   Samana was a name of apparent Lucayan origin (meaning "small middle forested land") used by the Spanish to designate one of the islands in the Bahamas. Granberry and Vesceliuus identify that island as the present-day Samana Cay.   Samana Cay had a permanent population during the first half of the 20th century, and the ruins of the settlement are visible on the south side of the island, near the western end.

Technological Level

Samana Cay is one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world.

Foreign Relations

Samana Cay is only recognized by a very small number of other countries. The United States prohibits travel to Samana Cay.

Agriculture & Industry

The cay is a source of cascarilla bark, which Overlord allows local indigenous peoples from nearby islands to harvest at no charge.   Samana Cay is a source of scientific knowledge and technological breakthroughs, that Overlord distributes to the world based on his own sense of fairness. Processes and advances that will help the general population of Earth are often given freely. Advancements that can be made profitable for corporations or governments are priced fairly outrageously even though such technology and knowledge will always turn out to be very profitable for those who can exploit it.   Recently, Overlord has opened the island to a limited amount of tourism and it has become a popular Spring Break destination.

Education

Education through the Doctorate level is free to all citizens of Samana Cay.
