History
When the first super massive star of our newborn universe exploded and created the first black hole in existence, Noxarath was born in the deepest, darkest center of the sigularity. A being born of unending hunger, they became a devourer of anything that fell within the gravitational pull of the black hole. However, as it fed, its hunger became insatiable. It needed more than the happenstance matter that would get pulled into the black hole; but it was trapped. It wasn't until, by pure chance, a strange piece of obsidian-like stone was pulled into the gravity well of Noxarath's prison. Its peculiar energy radiation touched Noxarath and formed a bond with the stone. The stone's specific radiation gave Noxarath the wedge needed to pry open a pathway just large enough to escape from the singularity. The effort caused the stone to explode but Noxarath saved a small piece before it could be swallowed by the black hole and imbued it with a small portion of its power and sent the crystal shard out into the universe to find life and light that Noxarath could feed upon.
Since that time, the being known as Noxarath has wandered the universe, settling in to star systems where it feeds off the system's star as well as the planets, and most delectably, the life force of any living creatures. It feeds on a system until there is no energy left then it moves on, often following the siren call of the obsidian shard it cast into the void all those millenia ago.
On planets with intelligent life, the obsidian relic (as it came to be known), gave the promise of power and mercy from the dark creature's hunger if appropriate sacrifices are made and the followers prove faithful. These cults become obsessed with pleasing Noxarath, sometimes gaining so much political power that any society collapses into degredation and corruption just before the creature destroys everything in the system and departs for another feeding ground. Noxarath seeks to plunge the universe into eternal darkness, consuming all light and life. It is driven by an insatiable hunger and a desire to assert its dominance over all creation.
