The Fall
In the Afterfall, both history and techonology are lost. Old countries, borders, languages, national identities and many other things from Ancient Times are completely forgotten. No one kept track of what happened, since everyone was too busy trying to survive, and many people holding key knowledge was unprepared to survive in harsh conditions, and died, taking their knowledge to their unmarked graves. For most people in these times, knowing how to wield a machete, how to hunt with a bow, how to take care of your goats, and when to plant and what are deemed much more important than history, science, or even knowing how to read and write.
However, everyone knows they're living in the carcass of a once mighty civilization. People know they're living "after the fall of the ancients", but due to the reasons explained before, no one really knows for sure what actually happened, in detail. The Fall is the term most people use to refer to the collapse and ultimate end of the civilization built by the Ancients. No one knows for certain how it happened, if it was a huge-one time disaster, if it was a conjunction of factors and situations, if it was a quick chain of events or if it was a slow and agonic process.
No one really knows what caused it either. There are many theories on the subject. Tinkers and Scavengers argue a lot about it, and most moderately educated people have a pet theory. Some blame the gods, some blame mother nature, others blame disease, draught, and some bold theories about unbelievably powerful weapons, or even creatures from beyond the Moon are not uncommon. Some people say it was destiny, others say it was bad luck, and others say the ancients brought this upon themselves, due to their hubris and lack of wisdom. Some say The Fall could have been avoided, others think that mankind was doomed from the beginning, but most people really don't care... they're too damn busy trying not to starve.
Pieces of evidence are scattered through the wastelands, and hidden in deep underground vaults, but no living human being has managed to piece up the whole puzzle together.
