Help

When you collaborate with an ally to achieve something.
There is a character that is taking the lead, making what's called the "main skill roll", and one or more different characters that are trying to aid by making "support skill rolls".
Supporting skill rolls give modifiers to the result of the main skill roll:
  • Success: +1.
  • Raise: +2.
  • Critical Failure: -2.
The maximum modifier someone can get due to help is +4. The only exception is Strength, provided there is enough space to cling to the thing being lifted, for example.

Simple encouragement and motivation also count as helping, but the GM must not allow it to be abused.

Before attempting to do this, it must be clear who is doing the Main Skill Roll and who is supporting, and how this is done. The GM may determine it is not actually collaboration, but rather independent tasks. The GM can also rule collaboration is not possible in some contexts, or for some specific tasks.

To do the opposite of helping, see Hinder.

Gearz the Tinker is trying to determine the purpose of an ancient artifact found by Dusty, the Scavenger, aided both by her apprentice, Bookworm, and Dusty. The GM determines the Technical Gap (see Tech System) gives this attempt a difficulty of 9.
  • Gearz will roll Smarts & Tech, to submit the artifact to some elaborate experiments in her workshop (Main Roll)
  • Bookworm helps by rolling Smarts & Tinker, to craft some special instruments for the experiments Gearz will carry out. Bookworm gets a 9, a success with 1 raise. Hence, the bonus given is +1 for the base success and +2 for the raise, for a +3 total modifier.
  • Dusty helps by rolling Smarts & Notice, to recall details about the place where it was found, providing useful context. Dusty gets a 10, a success with 1 raise, so he gets another +3 modifier.
  • Gearz' roll is getting a +3 modifier granted by Bookworm, and another +3 granted by Dusty, however, the cap is +4, so he rolls and gets a 5, modified by +4, so he gets just a 9, a Partial Success, which means he succeds, but with a drawback.
