Dorian Clans

Family

The Dorian Clans is the dwarven royal family that rules the Anvil mountain range. At one point, they also inhabited the Northern Anvil and The Hammer as well, but have been pushed out in recent decades by monsters from below.   The family is massive, and connections by both blood and marriage are held in very high regard, even when those connections are at some point broken. Races other than dwarves are given full rights so long as they can prove that, by blood or marriage, they are connected to the Dorian Family, though there has never been a non-dwarf on the throne in Stoneheart. Keeping these records is a very involved process, but one that is considered both necessary and respectable in the Dorian Clans, and Record Keepers are employed by the larger cities to maintain and update these records regularly.

Harmony

The Queen of the Dorian Clan discovered evidence of the End Spell Cataclysm roughly 100 years ago. This lead them to quickly cease their militaristic ways and to encourage an end to large scale conflicts wherever possible. Prior to this, the Dorian Clans had one of the most disciplined and well armed militaries in the world, and the most cutting edge technologies for warfare, and sought to push through every underground location in the world, exterminating underdark civilizations and monsters and controlling all of the underground. Since their discovery, however, they have been forced back into the Anvil, and several other pockets throughout the world.   While the Dorian Clans will still fight in self defense, they no longer seek to expand other than to reclaim some of their ancestral homelands, and will only intervene in surface wars to stop them, as they have at Cliffwatch Pass, where they have effectively halted the war between Larostria and the Eastern Federation. Each side knows that an act of aggression here will make you an enemy of the Dorians, and that fighting two other factions would lead to a quick defeat. They do push back against the incursions from the underdark, but are careful not to escalate the conflict to all out war.   This makes the Dorians valued advisors, negotiators and mediators. A Dorian can generally be trusted to be fair and even handed, and look to make compromises that will either please or upset all parties involved equally. The Dorians are often called in to settle matters between other nations or cities, and it is rare that they fight amongst themselves, with the exception of when someone acts to encourage conflict or acts against family. This does make them somewhat complacent, and difficult to move to action, as they are somewhat controlled by fear that their advanced military artifice and technology could be the cause of the next calamity.
