Battle of Korvas's Vortex Military Conflict in Potestatem | World Anvil

Battle of Korvas's Vortex

The Conflict

Prelude

The temple had ravaged the world for two cycles now. The greatest minds on earth feared for their souls. Their names have been stricken from history by the temple gods themselves. Only Korvas, the supposed mastermind behind the battle is remembered.

Deployment

Thousands of arcanists and sailors gathered on a makeshift wooden island amidst the central sea. A mile-wide spell circle was crafted for hundreds of days. from the second month of Umbra far into the fifth month of The Flayed One. It was during the first days of this month the temples power approached. Infinte magics began to stir at Potestatems weave and beasts below and above the waves began to slowly form. Magic crackled visibly as the great ritual and beasts mingeled.

Battlefield

The open ocean with only the now named Korvas's islands to the west lay for hundreds of miles in all directions. Only the estimated four hundred vessels provided the land. They were tied, glued, held, and weaved together by many sailors and magicians efforts into a great heap of ships.

Conditions

As the beasts of magic began to form and the first day of the sixth month, Judgement, approached, conditions worsend. Boiling in from the east, several clashing pseudo hurricanes rocked the massive mortal-made island.

The Engagement

On the first day of judgement, the beats formed of the sea rose high. The clouds of the hurricanes grinned wildly and began to throw bolts of power that crackled with glee. Firey forms erupted from the smallest candle flame and tore at the wooden island. Huge earthen creatures stood with feat planted on the ocean bottom and hurled great sections of the island. Amidst all this, Korvas, and the forgotten many batteled. With the beasts all around, there were no battle lines, only conflict.

Outcome

Korvas and the army of mages finished their spell circle, their incantations and rose a great unending onslaught of missels upon the temple itself. Glinting into view, the stone temple was slammed with the unending stream of power as it poured from the great circle. Not the temple, but the sky seemed to crack under the onslaught. A great horrifying tear sounded in reality and then it happened. The first smite. A great many fists rose from the temple and smashed through the magical stream and into the island. The ships did not buckle but remained still. Screams of men tore the air as the fists poured through them. The magic circle itself began to fade and the stream of energy ended. The beasts all blew apart and the tear in the sky fell to Potestatem. Where it fell now lays for all to see to this day.

Aftermath

Korvas's vortex lays on this battleground. By the end of Judgement, the endless rapids and a growing whirlpool had sucked the entire island of ships to the bottom of the sea. Great stone islands made of monsters lay on their sides like islands. Fire tore out of the ground in volcanoes. Miniature hurricanes whipped around islands. Great waves of energy rode around as if hunting more ships to sink.   These hurricanes still regularly occur and the whirlpool and rapids surrounding the islands is still active.

Historical Significance

Legacy

Korvas and the mages are the most profound attempt to overthrow the Temples power in recorded history and their failure has caused denizens of Potestatem to accept it's supposed invincibility. The temple proved itself beyond mortal means and has never seriously been attacked since that day.

Technological Advancement

Providing wild readings, auras, and innate magic, Korvas vortex is a sweet trap for many mages. Horrifyingly dangerous, and housing one of the densest number of planar gates in one area, most die trying to learn from its open connection to the weave.
