Smithing

The process that shapes metal through exposure to heat. In its flexible state, smiths pound the metal into shapes to make a variety of products. It is often preferred over glass, which is made through a similar process, because the resulting metal is far less brittle and has more utility.    When the technique was first discovered, it changed construction and a whole range of industries dramatically. It made various structures more durable, especially for making hinges and weaponry. There have also been breakthroughs in protection, ranging from boxes to large structures. It's also allowed for new creative expression and metal jewellery, including crowns and rings.   Making metal this flexible has provided many benefits, including making chain mail and plate armour. New techniques in smithing are always being developed and it has become an art in its own right.   Though a familiar sight, only those that train or are qualified in the profession can smith well enough to make the resources they'll need. Most instead commission a blacksmith to make whatever they need, since would-be blacksmiths need specialist equipment.   Most workshops are made of stone to avoid fire hazards and well-ventilated. Smoke build-up is common and needs a lot of firewood for a consistent, operating forge.    Forges provide other services than smithing, usually leather-working and other skills needed to make weapons, armour or jewellery. The main attraction, however, is watching hard metal turn a glowing red in the heat and watch it soften.
Access & Availability
Smiths are a cornerstone of a village's community, considered craftsmen alongside stonemasons, carpenters and painters. They serve as a needed utility and make practical items.
Complexity
Bellows are needed to maintain heat for the fires. Tongs that are resistant to heat, hammers and an anvil are needed to shape the metal. A chimney is recommended to keep smoke out of the workshop.
