Science

Science in the world is defined by sufficiently understanding the world well enough to be able to control it.  Opposed to magic, which may need to understand the world well enough to know what needs to change, science requires understanding the world well enough to know how to change it.  As such, scientific pursuits can observe the change as it's going, which frequently can allow for deeper understanding and progressing the field of science.
Magic, as it gains use and understanding, often turns into scientific fields, with both knowledge gained from magic and knowledge gained from science able to yield scientific progress.  However, magic generally cannot progress on its own without the deeper understanding science brings, pushing a deeper understanding of the world.
