Many people believe that magic must be unstructured and chaotic, and for them perhaps that must be true. This belief comes from the fear of science and the structure that science imposes on everything it touches.
Structure is not a fundamental principle of science and the cause of discord between magic and science. Rather, the fundamental principle and inherent cause for discord comes from the studying, the investigation that is necessary for science.
Magic need not be studied to be structured. The opposite instead is true -- structure around magic strengthens belief in it. It is much easier for someone to believe that the same outcome will occur than to believe that something completely new or unexpected will happen. The studying of magic is what most often pulls in questions or doubts. Once someone starts to ask, "why" or "how," they're more often able to see other possible outcomes that are capable of occurring, lowering their belief in any one specific one.
