Folded spaces

Welcome to the world of Poisonous Mist! One day, Earth is suddenly covered in a mysterious Mist. As a result, billions of people die and the handful of survivors awakens with strange powers. As monsters start killing them, Anne-Line, a scientist, tries to make sense of what's happening and to prevent what's left of France from becoming a dystopian society. Come read about her struggle!

Report: Folded Spaces

Author: Anne-Line DecroixDate: 210 days post-Mist — Confidentiality: Public
Objective
Present our newest technology, folded spaces, how it works and its dangers.
  Background
Since the Mist and made all of our modern technologies crash, we have been scrambling to repair them or develop alternatives. While we are still struggling to do the first, we have had some success with the second by working directly with the Mist.

Mechanisms

What is it made of? World faults are holes in the reality that have suddenly appear all over Earth. It is through them that Mist and Mist monsters have slipped into our world. These faults appear like a fabric that has been ripped off, with visible pieces as black as the void of space left hanging off. It is when investigating this "cloth of the world" that we discovered we could tear pieces off and use the Mist to manipulate them.

How does it work? This cloth can then be stretched and moved to wrapped around an object , then edges are brought back together and pinched with clipses to maintain them closed. These clips are metallic so that Mist can be stored inside to allow them to manipulate the cloth. They are linked together in chains, allowing them to be folded back on top of each other until only one link is left to form the "handle". The rest of the clothes and anything it is wrapped around then disappear from our reality, with only the handle left in our hands.
If all the clipses are not all closed at the same time, or if several clipse chains are used, part of them can be further folded inside the cloth so that only a small and manageable handle is left at the end. A variation is that instead of clipses, a pin is used around which the cloth is wrapped, only leaving the pin at the end.

What can it store? This makes for an incredible "bag" than can transport cumbersome objects and materials over any distances. The cloth appears to be stretchable infinitely, although the more you do so, the harder it is to do it and the more Mist it requires. In practice, this means that we are able to store an entire warehouse inside just one bag

Limitations

As Mist is used to create and manipulate folded space, they are therefore associated with all of its limitations dangers.

During the creation of folded spaces: World fault are very dangerous, as a high level of Mist comes into our world in these places, thus increasing the risk of Mist contamination. Mist monsters also comes out there and tend to linger in the area. This limits the gathering of world cloth for the production of folded spaces. The handling of the cloth also requires people to be "powerful"—i.e., to have been exposed to high level of Mist and to have survived the experience with their mind intact.

During the storage of content inside: No members of the animal kingdom (mammals, birds, fish, amphibians...) can survive inside folded spaces, thus preventing their storage and limiting their movements into our post-apocalyptical world.

During its transport: As folded spaces have a very high level of Mist, they need to be handled carefully to avoid contamination. As a consequence, most people can only transport one or two folded space at a time without risks. Even like this, it is better to avoid touching the metallic handles directly and we have been testing handle covers in a variety of materials—ceramic has given us good results but can break, and so we now favour silicon.

During the recovery of its content: The major problem with this new technology is that so far, while anyone can close a folded space, only Anne-Line Decroix has managed to open them again afterwards.

Impact

Rhythm of recovery: Thanks to folded spaces, we have been able to greatly increase the rhythm of supply recovery. This is both thanks to the ease of storage and transport, but also because they have allowed us to gather anything indiscriminately and leaving the sorting for later.

What we are storing: In addition to food, clothes, and tools, folded space have allowed us to store a huge amount of raw materials with which we will be able to one day recreate our society. This include dangerous and even unstable chemicals and gases, as their reactive seems to be "frozen" inside the folded space due to the absence of oxygen in their and the weird properties of the Mist itself. We have also stored specimens of all plants, plant grains and fungi that survived First exposure to the Mist.

Conclusion

When storing anything in a folded space, please don't forget to 1) attach a label to the outside of the handle with the exact place of origin and the category of content you have sorted inside, and 2) add this information to our register. We have already reached a thousand of filled folded spaces and without some basic information it will take at the very least decades for us to be able to recover anything.

Wow, Amelie, that was a very fun read! Bag of holding with the mist as its fuel and a carefully wrapped cloth as its canvas.   The limitations to the tech and analysis of it was super awesome. Great article!

Thanks <3 I made this to have a solution for long distance transportation of stuff industrial materials and libraries in a world where cars didn't work, but I didn't want people to have fancy backpacks videogame-style XD

Bags of Holding are a very common trope, but it's for a good reason, and I really like this one, especially detailing the mechanics behind it :D

Thanks <3 I had fun with the mechanics and limitations, as I really wanted this to be focused on moving warehouse-sized stuff that would be troublesome to get back rather than just have them be a fancy backpack :D
