Everglen
Overview
Everglen is the largest country of Plimia and the most diverse in its population. Originally the homeland of the wood elves, Everlgen now sits as the crown of humanity's power. Elves have been given plenty of land in the vast forests of Everlgen, and their tribes assist the king in fair and proper governance. Because of this, Everglen became a beacon of hope for many displaced people. Everglen was once part of the great country of Uma, but it split apart after a 100-year war, with the other half becoming Kengrim. The two countries are still bitter rivals and have fought many wars over ideology and border control.
After the Mark appeared, Everglen began closing its borders, suspecting that agents of Kengrim were responsible. The country has become quite difficult to access legally, and the once well-respected Emerald Guards of the military have become vicious, power-abusing tyrants.
Everglen has traditionally stood for magical freedom, but has recently outlawed death magic, blood magic, and any dark arts because of the Mark. These recent crackdowns have led to elvish persecution and discrimination of people from Kengrim and Malfastar.
Geography
Everglen is filled with lush forests, rolling hills, and temperate prairies. Its northern border with Northwind is lined with the Frostback Mountain range, and its southern territory is home to vast river systems. The Wizard's Bay takes up a large portion of the center of the country, and small fishing villages have sprouted up all along the coast. Everglen's most notable feature though, are her forests. The major woodlands include:
- The Feywilds (North/North Eastern lands)
- The Black Woods (Eastern border with Kengrim)
- The Great Uma Forest (Southern riverlands)
Everglen is generally quite temperate. It experiences heavy rainfall in the spring and fall, and the coastal towns have been known to flood from time to time. Farmland dominates the hills around the western slopes of the capital city of Tsulver. Winters are cold and harsh up north, and snowfall often occurs across most of the country. Farmers and loggers drive the Everglen economy, and together they feed and house much of their own country as well as Northwind, Kengrim, and Xenex (when trade is possible).
Demography and Population
Everglen is the ancestral home of the wood elves. After the humans escaped their slavery on Larevin Island, many settled alongside the elves in Everglen and Kengrim. The elves were curious about humans and were surprised when most, if not all, humans spoke their language. Humanity wanted to start anew with the elves after the high moon elves of Larevin had imprisoned them for so long. So, the elves and humans made a strong bond which was physically displayed by the joint construction of the Wizard's Tower (now sunken in the Wizard's Bay).
To this day, humans and elves in Everglen share a strong bond. Though they all fought in the 100-Year War that broke up Uma, current-day relations inside Everglen are generally strong. Recent events with the Mark have caused some humans to begin hunting elves that practice banned magics, and this is stressing ties across the nation.
Everglen is home to all sorts of people in its larger cities. One can expect to find humans, elves, dwarves, goblins, tieflings, and everything in between. In the northern city of Mora, one can still spot giants from time to time. Everglen has the largest population in Plimia, and as such, it has one of the strongest militaries, the Emerald Guard.
Territories
The governments of Everlgen and Kengrim constantly battle over border disputes. Kengrim claims that the majority of the Black Woods on Everglen's side belong to the ethnic wood elves of Kengrim. Everglen refuses to agree to this, and the two use it as an excuse to war often, though the wood elves would much rather prefer their lands not be destroyed every few years. Everglen controls the largest territory of any country in Plimia and as such drives the economy of the continent. All trade routes go through Everglen, and it is the seat of the second-largest gold mint in the world, behind the Grand Mint of Empiredon. Everglen assisted the humans of Northwind in exterminating the giants and claiming their territory. Because of this, Everglen still holds many military bases in Northwind itself.
When it isn't warring with Kengrim, Everglen often has border scuffles with its southern neighbor of Malfastar. Malfastar practices extreme religious persecution of magic and magical folk, an ideology Everglen doesn't normally agree with. As such, the two will battle from time to time, losing and gaining the same wartorn grounds every few years. Everglen has more immigrants from Malfastar than any other country in the world.
The Black Woods
Technological Level
Everglen puts a large portion of their money into education. Many scholars seek employment in Everglen's colleges, especially the Wizard's Tower. Generally speaking, Everglen is ahead when it comes to technology and education, although no one comes close to the technology of the Empiredon dwarves. Eveglen's magical instruction is second only to the source of magic itself: Larevin Island. Still, even with these great efforts, poverty and lack of education plague Everglen's largest cities and many small towns, which still rely on churches or homeschools.
Government Structure
Crowned Republic-Eligible voters may vote for representatives for their townships or lands, but ultimate power rests with the Council. The royal family has a King to act as a figurehead who speaks for the Council but holds little power. Councilmen are chosen by elected town and city representatives alongside the royal family. The King stands as an image for the common people. The Council holds true power. Oftentimes, the King may order the military as he pleases, but the Council holds supreme influence over it all. Recently, the Council has gained new unelected officials behind closed doors and the king has begun abusing some of his powers.
