Xoani Feast of Years

The Xoani culture, like many on Stelavorn, celebrates the birthdays of its members, but they take a more in-depth and contemplative approach called the Feast of Years.   For the first seven years of a Xoani's life, their parents, older siblings, and others close to them collect stories, memories, and mementos of important events for the Xoani. Once they turn seven, this responsibility shifts to them. Xoani culture puts a lot of weight on this ritual, and phrases like "that's one for your Feast" are uttered during important moments, good and bad, throughout a Xoani's life.   The actual feast is a two-day affair that begins with a day for the person whose birthday it is to contemplate the last year alone. They are excused for a day from all work and other responsibilities, and interrupting this annual time of remembrance and contemplation is not done lightly. Sometimes a Xoani may choose to bring a particularly trusted companion along for this. Children will sometimes spend the day with a parent or grandparent, and married couples often do their remembrances together. During this time, the Xoani remembers the events of the last year that they don't want to discuss publicly and often sifts through their regrets. They refer to the practice as "touching your secrets."   The second day is a much more jubilant affair. If the prior year was good or contained noteworthy good elements, these are brought up and celebrated. If the previous year was difficult, they celebrate their survival and make plans to make the next year better. This is typically much more public, with friends, family, and cordial acquaintances invited to attend. A feast of the Xoani's favorite foods is prepared, and affirmations are shared. The specific flavor of the celebration can be rowdy or subdued based on the temperament of the individual Xoani.
