Pehliff
Pehliff, The Grinning Harlequin
Alias: Liff
Race: High Elf (Suspected non-mortal)
Eyes: Burning Gold
Affiliations: The Harlequins, God Hands, Shadows Between Stars
Known Roles: Manipulator of Empires, Possessor of a God Hand Amulet, Devourer of Fate
Origins and Masks
Pehliff first appeared in recorded history under the alias Liff, during the construction of Maddax Tibur’s secret site for Orb research in Albion. Posing as a visionary and scholar with knowledge of the planes, he helped Emperor Maddax and the mage Loutib refine the orbs meant to imprison gods.
His knowledge was deep, prophetic, and unnatural—claiming visions that told him of 30 planes of existence, and aiding in “upcasting” the magic of the Orbs.
He vanished before his work concluded, and was later confirmed to be no mere mortal, but a manipulator and deviant aligned with the darkest currents of the cosmos.
True Nature Revealed
Caladawn, one of Platera’s ancient archmagi, confirmed Pehliff’s nature to be far more terrifying than a charlatan or rogue mage. He described Pehliff as:
“A fracture. A flaw in the pattern of the world. A consciousness that did not belong to Platera.”
“He is of the Dream Between Stars… a place no god would claim, and all mortals fear in silence.”
Pehliff’s true form flickers between elf, something scaled, and something vast and monstrous—a being becoming. He seeks not balance, but disruption, a cosmic realignment written in murder and mockery.
The God Hand Amulet
Most chilling of all: Pehliff now carries a God Hand Amulet—one of the divine keys crafted from the first fallen gods. These are not trinkets, but vessels of divine essence, capable of channelling the forgotten powers of the God Hands—beings once exiled for their domains of mutation, trickery, lust, destruction, death, and more.
With it, Pehliff’s actions become rituals, not mere killings. Every assassination, every soul reaped, may serve a deeper purpose in ascending him to godhood—or ushering in the return of the God Hands themselves.
Role in the Greater War
Pehliff was granted one of the orbs by Arcanius—an act Caladawn labels a grave mistake. Whether through manipulation, deceit, or false prophecy, Pehliff now moves freely between planes, between realities, seeking something ancient and final.
He assassinated Rikkon of the Black Dragon Scales in the shadows of war—not out of strategy, but as a symbolic blow to hope.
Legacy and Threat
Pehliff is not just a villain.
He is a myth in the making.
A harbinger of the End-Words, the final verses that the Weave itself dreads to sing.
Where Pehliff walks, the laws of magic strain.
Where he smiles, prophecy burns.
“He is not merely ambition.
He is the smile of the end.” — Caladawn
