Origins of Clan Mawrend
Clan Mawrend was born in the shadowed tunnels beneath the ruins of an ancient dwarven hold, where Gold veins are plenty. The clan's early years were fraught with infighting and desperate survival, like many Skaven clans, but it was their tenacity and ruthless ambition that set them apart.
The name “Mawrend” comes from the clan's brutal tactics of swarming enemies and “rending them to the marrow.” From their subterranean lairs, they forged a reputation for savage efficiency, using stolen dwarven engineering knowledge to construct crude war machines and devastating siege weapons.
Rise of Gorrik Mawrend
Gorrik Mawrend rose to power during a time of upheaval. Born with an unusually muscular build and dark fur streaked with patches of pale gray, Gorrik’s appearance alone set him apart. His ascent began after he single-handedly killed the clan's previous leader, Wretchir Bonebite, during a coup. Using brute strength and a strategic mind, he quickly consolidated power, uniting the warring factions of Clan Mawrend under his iron rule.
Gorrik’s leadership was marked by a relentless focus on strength and conquest. He decreed that only the strongest Skaven—those who survived deadly trials of combat and cunning—could hold positions of power within the clan. This harsh meritocracy elevated Clan Mawrend from obscurity to prominence in Rat Pitt.
The Peak of Power
Under Gorrik’s command, Clan Mawrend became a dominant force within the Skaven society. Gorrik forged alliances with warlords from neighboring clans and acquired warbeasts and siege engines from Clan Darkborn. He expanded the clan’s holdings, capturing nearby tunnels and subjugating weaker Skaven groups.
One of Gorrik’s most infamous campaigns was the Battle of the Dwarfhold Deep, where Clan Mawrend destroyed a fledgling dwarven colony attempting to reclaim their ancestral home. Gorrik personally led the assault, wielding his massive Dragonbone-forged blade, Fangshard, which emitted a sickly purple glow and was said to corrupt the minds of those it touched. The victory earned Gorrik the title of “Breaker of Stone.”
Fall of Gorrik and the Clan’s Decline
Gorrik’s ambitions eventually led him to challenge Clan Fangmaw, a growing power in Rat Pitt. Dismissing the female-led clan as weak and inferior, Gorrik underestimated their cunning and tenacity. In a disastrous ambush, Gorrik was captured by the Fangmaws, and Vreshka Fangmaw personally castrated him and then executed him in a humiliating public display, severing his throat and his pride. It is said after Vreshka castrated him, Vreshka eat his testicles in front of him before slitting his throat.
Without Gorrik’s leadership, Clan Mawrend spiraled into chaos. The remaining warlords squabbled for power, weakening the clan from within. Many of their holdings were overtaken by rival clans, and their influence in Rat Pitt diminished.
Modern Status
Today, Clan Mawrend is a shadow of its former self, struggling to reclaim its former glory. Fragmented and leaderless, the clan exists as a loose collection of warring factions. While some remnants of Gorrik’s loyalists attempt to keep his vision alive, others have abandoned his ideals, seeking survival through treachery and scavenging.
Despite their decline, the name “Mawrend” still carries weight in the Underdark. Stories of their brutal conquests and the might of Gorrik Mawrend are whispered with fear and awe, serving as a cautionary tale of hubris and the cost of underestimating one’s enemies.

His Dragonbone blade, Fangshard, was lost during his capture, and rumors persist that it lies hidden in the Scarred Warrens, jealously guarded by Clan Fangmaw. Many Skaven dream of retrieving it, hoping to harness its power to restore Clan Mawrend’s former might.

1. Skretch Mawrend
- Role: Eldest son and aspiring warlord
- Traits: Brutal, ambitious, but lacking patience
- Fate: Skretch was groomed as Gorrik’s successor, but his overconfidence led to his downfall. He attempted to overthrow Gorrik prematurely, only to be publicly executed by his father as an example to the clan.
2. Vyrka Mawrend
- Role: Second-born daughter and tactician
- Traits: Highly intelligent, manipulative, and a skilled planner
- Fate: Vyrka excelled in creating battle strategies and sabotage missions for Clan Mawrend. After Gorrik’s death, she fled Rat Pitt, taking a small group of loyalists with her. Rumors suggest she now leads a rogue warband in the deep tunnels, plotting to reclaim the clan’s former glory.
3. Rikkit Mawrend
- Role: Youngest son and assassin
- Traits: Stealthy, calculating, and fiercely loyal to Gorrik
- Fate: Rikkit served as his father’s personal assassin, eliminating threats within and outside the clan. After Gorrik’s capture and execution by Clan Fangmaw, Rikkit vowed revenge. He attempted to infiltrate the Scarred Warrens to assassinate Vreshka Fangmaw but was captured and was castrated and is kept as a slave.
4. Krelka Mawrend
- Role: Third-born daughter and alchemist
- Traits: Obsessed with necromancy experimentation
- Fate: Krelka was more interested in necromancy and alchemy than the politics of leadership. Her unstable experiments often caused chaos within the clan, but her creations were instrumental in many of Gorrik’s victories. After the clan’s fall, Krelka vanished, with rumors suggesting she joined Clan Boneclaw, where she continues her dangerous experiments.
5. Grik Mawrend
- Role: Middle son and warlock engineer
- Traits: Greedy, inventive, and fiercely competitive
- Fate: Grik’s mechanical genius contributed to Clan Mawrend’s mastery of siege warfare. However, his obsessive desire for power led to a feud with Krelka, culminating in a deadly duel where Krelka emerged victorious. Grik’s body was used in her Necromancy experiments.
Legacy of Gorrik’s Children
The Mawrend bloodline remains fractured and scattered after the clan’s decline. Those who survived the fall of Gorrik have continued to shape their own destinies in the chaotic world of the Skaven, with some dreaming of restoring Clan Mawrend’s glory while others embrace new allegiances.
