Clan Deathblight
Origins of Clan Deathblight
Clan Deathblight emerged from the noxious depths of the Underdark, forged in the fumes of toxic pits and sludge pools. Unlike many other Skaven clans, Deathblight focused intensely on the fusion of magic and machinery, combining the sinister ingenuity of Skaven engineering with the destructive potential of sorcery. From its earliest days, the clan was infamous for its reckless experiments, which often caused catastrophic failures but occasionally produced innovations of terrifying power.
The clan took its name from its reliance on biological and chemical warfare, creating plagues and toxins to weaken their enemies before engaging in battle. The name "Deathblight" became synonymous with silent death, as their poison clouds and virulent concoctions claimed countless lives in the Underdark.
Volrik Deathblight's Rise to Power
Volrik Deathblight, born into a litter of slaves, clawed his way to prominence through sheer intellect and ambition. A runt by Skaven standards, Volrik compensated for his physical shortcomings with a natural aptitude for engineering and sorcery. His early experiments drew the attention of the previous warlock-engineer, who saw potential in the young Skaven and took him on as an apprentice.
Volrik’s genius soon outshone his master’s, and in typical Skaven fashion, he orchestrated his mentor’s demise. By planting a volatile reactor in his master’s workshop, Volrik ensured that the "accident" was attributed to faulty engineering—a fate common enough in Clan Deathblight that no one questioned it. With his rival eliminated, Volrik claimed the title of Warlock Engineer of Clan Deathblight and began shaping the clan in his image.
The Innovations of Clan Deathblight
Under Volrik’s leadership, Clan Deathblight became a hub of warped innovation. Among their most notorious creations are:
- The Plague Engines: Towering war machines equipped with vats of boiling toxins, capable of spreading death across entire battlefields.
- Blight Bombs: Highly unstable vials that release lethal clouds of toxic fumes, annihilating anything in their radius.
- Blight-Crawlers: Spider-like automata armed with serrated claws, used for infiltration and assassination.
- The Deathblight Harness: A personal invention of Volrik’s, this exoskeleton enhances his physical abilities and protects him from harm while amplifying his spellcasting and engineering prowess.
Major Conflicts and Achievements
The Purge of Clan Rotfang
Clan Deathblight’s first significant victory under Volrik was the destruction of Clan Rotfang, a rival Skaven faction that sought to steal their technology. Volrik deployed his prototype Plague Engines and unleashed a chemical apocalypse on Clan Rotfang’s warren, leaving nothing but decaying corpses and toxic ruins.
The Siege of Deepforge Hold
Volrik led a daring assault on the Deepforge Hold, a fortified dwarven outpost in the Underdark. Using tunneling drills and Deathblight Blight Bombs, the clan breached the dwarves’ defenses and claimed vast quantities of precious metals and runic artifacts. The hold’s surviving inhabitants were subjected to Volrik’s grotesque experiments.
Conflict with the Council of Thirteen
Volrik’s growing power and influence caught the attention of the Council of Thirteen, the ruling body of all Skaven. Fearing his ambition, the Council attempted to assassinate him. Volrik, however, survived the attempt and retaliated by sabotaging a shipment meant for the Council, causing a devastating plague that decimated one of their strongholds. Though Volrik was forced to publicly feign submission, the Council’s failure to eliminate him only bolstered his reputation.
Volrik Deathblight's Personality
Volrik is a quintessential Skaven: paranoid, ruthless, and ambitious. However, his intellect and cunning set him apart. He is a meticulous planner, rarely acting without ensuring every possible outcome serves his advantage. While most Skaven leaders rule through brute force or terror, Volrik maintains his authority by offering his followers a share of his inventions’ benefits—though these “benefits” often come with a deadly cost.
Physically, Volrik is frail and hunched, with patchy gray fur and an unsettlingly large left eye that glows faintly. His Deathblight Harness, a grotesque fusion of metal and flesh, enhances his frail body, giving him an almost otherworldly appearance.
The Deathblight Dynasty
Volrik is known to have sired numerous offspring, many of whom serve as apprentices, spies, or enforcers within Clan Deathblight. Notable among them are:
- Skrizzik Deathblight: A prodigious warlock-engineer in his own right, Skrizzik is fiercely loyal to his father and oversees the clan’s experiments on living subjects.
- Vyrka Deathblight: A cunning assassin and sorceress who specializes in sabotage and espionage. She is often deployed to neutralize rival Skaven leaders.
- Karrik Deathblight: A brute who has undergone extensive enhancement, Karrik serves as Volrik’s personal bodyguard and enforcer.
The Current State of Clan Deathblight
Clan Deathblight continues to thrive under Volrik’s rule, their warren a sprawling labyrinth of toxic fumes, whirring machines, and glowing sludge pools. Their influence extends beyond the Underdark, with their weapons and toxins finding their way into the hands of Skaven clans and other nefarious groups.
Volrik’s ultimate goal is to ascend to a seat on the Council of Thirteen, using his technological and magical prowess to cement his dominance over all Skaven. Whether he achieves this ambition or succumbs to the treachery that defines Skaven society, Volrik Deathblight and his clan remain a force of unparalleled ingenuity and destruction in the dark world of the Skaven.
