Ashbrand Warband
Origins: The Fall of the Flamepeak Clan
The Ashbrand Warband traces its origins to the once-mighty Flamepeak Clan, a powerful orc tribe that lived in the volcanic region known as Mount Vrothka. The Flamepeak orcs revered fire as both a destructive force and a purifying spirit. They believed their ancestors’ souls resided in the mountain’s lava flows, guiding their descendants through dreams and visions.
The Flamepeak Clan grew strong as blacksmiths, warriors, and raiders, wielding weapons forged in volcanic forges. Their leader, Warchief Urzog Flamecaller, was a legendary figure, known for his connection to the fiery spirits of the mountain and his ability to wield fire magic—a rare gift among orcs. Under his rule, the Flamepeak Clan flourished, raiding neighbouring lands and forging a fearsome reputation.
However, the clan’s dominance was shattered in a catastrophe known as the "Night of Black Flame". During an eruption of Mount Vrothka, the mountain unleashed far more than molten rock. Legends say a dark entity, a Spirit of Ash and Shadow, rose from the depths of the volcano. It consumed the souls of the dead, turning the skies black and smothering the land in ash. Warchief Urzog fought to hold the spirit back but vanished into the lava, leaving the orcs leaderless and scattered.
With their home destroyed, the Flamepeak Clan became wanderers. They took the name "Ashbrand"—a mark of both shame and pride. It symbolized their ruin, but also their survival, for even in ash, fire can endure.
The Rise of the Ashbrand Warband
From the ashes of the Flamepeak Clan, the Ashbrand Warband emerged as a nomadic group of orc survivors. At first, they roamed as scattered tribes, struggling to survive in lands that feared and despised them. Over decades, it was Tharva Ashhand, an orc war-leader with soot-blackened skin and molten scars, who united the clans under a single banner.
Tharva claimed to have seen visions of Urzog Flamecaller in the smoke of battlefield fires, guiding him to lead the Ashbrand Warband to glory. He carried a legendary weapon—a blackened great-axe wreathed in ember-like runes—which he called the Cindermaul. Many believed this weapon was touched by the same fiery spirits that once blessed the Flamepeak Clan.
Under Tharva's leadership, the Ashbrand Warband adopted a brutal but effective lifestyle. They became raiders, mercenaries, and survivalists, moving constantly across the land like a storm of fire and shadow. Tharva instilled a new creed among his warriors:
"We are fire. We take what we need, we burn what we cannot carry, and we rise stronger from the ashes."
A Nomadic Way of Life
The Ashbrand Warband became known for their swift raids and nomadic existence. Unlike sedentary tribes, they did not build permanent settlements. Instead, they relied on war-camps, mobile forges, and beast-drawn wagons to sustain their warband. Entire families traveled together—warriors, smiths, shamans, and children—bound by loyalty to the Ashbrand banner.
Key aspects of Ashbrand culture include:
- The Ashforge Rituals: Weapons and armor are “reborn” in fire and ash to strengthen them and honor their ancestors. Every warrior carries at least one weapon blackened in sacred ash.
- The Ember Trials: Young orcs undergo brutal tests of endurance, including walking barefoot across smoldering coals and standing within rings of flame to prove their strength and courage.
- Shamans of the Cinderspire: Spiritual leaders who interpret the visions in smoke and ash, guiding the warband and communing with fire spirits. They often use pyromantic magic in battle.
The Ashbrand believe fire purifies both the strong and the weak. In their worldview, only those who endure hardship and flame are worthy of survival, while all else must burn away.
Ashbrand Warfare
The Ashbrand Warband are masters of hit-and-run tactics, striking quickly and decisively before fading back into the wilderness. They rely on speed, brute strength, and psychological warfare, often setting fields and villages ablaze to sow terror. Their warriors are clad in soot-blackened armor adorned with fire-forged symbols, giving them a fearsome and otherworldly appearance.
Their elite warriors, known as the Flamebringers, wield fire-touched weapons and lead the charge in raids. Their war cries—said to mimic the roar of a volcano—are known to send less disciplined enemies fleeing in panic.
The Ashbrand Warband also reveres mountain beasts and fire-touched creatures. They are known to tame creatures like wolves, boars, and even wyverns to serve as mounts and war-beasts.
The Burning Path and Conflicts
For generations, the Ashbrand Warband wandered across kingdoms, leaving trails of smoke and ruin in their wake. They clashed with kingdoms, strongholds, and woodlands, all of whom labeled them barbaric marauders. However, the Ashbrand viewed these conflicts as necessary cycles of survival, seeing themselves as fire—destroyers of the weak and heralds of renewal.
Their most famous conflicts include:
- The Searing of Deepstone Hold: The Ashbrand Warband laid siege to a dwarven city, forcing the dwarves to retreat into the deepest tunnels while their outer halls were burned and looted.
- The Scorching of Greenveil: In retaliation for years of hostility, the Ashbrand razed an elven woodland to the ground, turning ancient groves into ash and driving the surviving elves into exile.
- The Ember Pact: At one point, the Tibur Empire hired the Ashbrand Warband as mercenaries to crush rebellious provinces. However, the Ashbrand betrayed the Empire once the gold ran dry, burning entire supply lines before disappearing into the hills.
Modern Day Ashbrand
Today, the Ashbrand Warband remains one of the most feared orc groups across the land. They have no single homeland, moving like wildfire from one region to the next. Leadership now falls to Vorgath Flamehide, a massive orc warchief whose skin is marked with volcanic scars. Vorgath has united the scattered warbands once more, carrying on Tharva Ashhand’s legacy.
Under Vorgath’s rule, the Ashbrand Warband has begun larger, more organized campaigns. Whispers speak of a new goal: reclaiming Mount Vrothka, the birthplace of their people. Vorgath claims he has seen visions of Urzog Flamecaller and that the dark spirit of ash that destroyed their home can now be bent to the Warband’s will.
The return to Mount Vrothka promises a reckoning for the Ashbrand Warband—whether they will reclaim their lost power or be consumed by the very fire they worship remains to be seen.
Legacy of the Ashbrand
The Ashbrand Warband has become a symbol of both terror and resilience. To their enemies, they are relentless marauders, leaving ruin in their wake. To their own people, they are survivors—warriors who endure destruction and rise stronger.
Their blackened weapons, soot-covered faces, and fiery banners are known across the land. Kingdoms fortify their borders and whisper prayers to their gods when word spreads that the Ashbrand Warband is on the move.
For the Ashbrand, fire is eternal. As their war-chant echoes:
"In flame, we rise. In ash, we endure. All will burn, and from ruin, we will rise anew."
Allies of the Ashbrand Warband
The Ashbrand Warband, being a nomadic and ruthless group, does not maintain traditional alliances. Instead, their allies tend to be temporary, forged out of necessity, mutual benefit, or shared goals.
- The Flamecallers (Fire Cultists)
- A fanatical sect of fire-worshippers who view destruction and rebirth as sacred. They revere the same elemental fire spirits that the Ashbrand orcs believe in, calling them the "Flameborn Ancestors."
- Flamecaller shamans often serve as spiritual allies, offering pyromantic spells and fiery rituals to empower Ashbrand warriors before battles. In return, the Ashbrand protect these cultists and allow them to accompany the Warband as advisors or zealots.
- Notable Figure: High Ember Seeker Vhalra, a human cult leader who believes the Ashbrand are the heralds of an apocalyptic flame that will purify the world.
- The Blackclaw Hobgoblins
- The Blackclaw Legion is a disciplined hobgoblin mercenary force that occasionally partners with the Ashbrand for large-scale campaigns. Though the Blackclaws are far more organized, they respect the Ashbrand’s sheer ferocity in battle and often hire them as shock troops for sieges or raids.
- However, this relationship is transactional, with both sides viewing each other as tools to be used. Once their common goals are achieved, hostilities often resume.
- The Tree Choppaz
- The Tree Choppaz they are united by their shared disdain for elves and spirits. the Ashband help them with the Fenraiths and Leaf Cuttaz.
- However, this relationship is transactional, with Ashbrand viewing them as tools to be used. One day the Ashbrand will confederate them in to their faction.
Enemies of the Ashbrand Warband
The Ashbrand Warband’s brutal raids and scorched-earth tactics have earned them a long list of enemies, ranging from entire kingdoms to specific groups seeking revenge.
- The Tibur Empire
- The Tibur Empire, with its disciplined legions and rigid order, has clashed with the Ashbrand Warband for centuries. The orcs’ nomadic and chaotic ways directly oppose Tiburan values of order and conquest.
- The Ashbrand’s betrayal of the Empire during the Ember Pact—a mercenary agreement gone wrong—created a deep enmity. Tiburan generals now view the Warband as a threat to border security, and imperial bounty hunters actively hunt Ashbrand leaders.
- Notable Enemy: General Cassian Lorrus III, a Tiburan war hero dedicated to eradicating the Ashbrand after they burned several imperial fortresses.
- The Elves of Greenveil (Emerald Forest)
- The Ashbrand Warband’s Scorching of Greenveil—a devastating campaign where the Warband razed sacred elven forests—earned them the eternal hatred of the Emerald Wardens, a militant group of elven rangers.
- The Wardens have sworn to hunt the Ashbrand to extinction, ambushing their warbands in wooded regions and sabotaging their camps.
- Notable Enemy: Lady Syltheris Windshade, a legendary elven ranger who lost her family during the Greenveil campaign and now hunts the Ashbrand relentlessly.
- The Dwarves of Deepstone Hold
- The dwarves have never forgiven the Ashbrand Warband for the Searing of Deepstone Hold, where their outer halls were looted and scorched. Dwarven leaders see the Ashbrand as dishonorable savages who defile the art of blacksmithing and fire-forging.
- Dwarven Stoneguard Legions have since fortified their cities against future raids, and dwarven bounty hunters often pursue Ashbrand leaders to claim vengeance and glory.
- The Order of the Silverbrand
- A knightly order of holy warriors, the Order of the Silverbrand has taken it upon themselves to hunt down “the enemies of light,” which includes the Ashbrand Warband. The knights view the Ashbrand’s fire-worship and destructive raids as evil acts that must be purged.
- The Order often leads crusades against the Ashbrand, attempting to drive them from the lands they pillage. Paladins of the Silverbrand are particularly feared among the orcs, as they wield radiant magic capable of countering the Ashbrand’s fire-touched abilities.
- Notable Enemy: High Paladin Eryndor Thalmar, a holy knight whose crusade has cost the Ashbrand several war-leaders and sacred forges.
- Other Orc Tribes
- The Ashbrand Warband’s scorched-earth methods and fire-worship are viewed with suspicion and contempt by more traditional orc tribes. Clans that venerate spirits of stone, water, or wind see the Ashbrand’s reliance on fire as heretical.
- This has led to numerous clashes with rival orc tribes, particularly the Stonejaw Clan and the Skyfury Clan, both of whom have fought against the Ashbrand for territory and honor.
- The Blackroot Ogres
- The Blackroot Ogres, a brutal and territorial force in swampy and forested lands, have fought against the Ashbrand on multiple occasions. The ogres view the Ashbrand’s fire magic and destructive raids as a direct threat to their dark marshland domains.
- Battles between the Ashbrand and Blackroot Ogres are particularly savage, with entire regions left scorched and littered with corpses.
Neutral Parties
Some groups neither ally with nor oppose the Ashbrand directly but exist in a precarious state of neutrality.
- Independent Mercenary Guilds: While most view the Ashbrand as dangerous marauders, some guilds have employed their warriors as shock troops during wars, paying them handsomely in loot or supplies.
Summary
The Ashbrand Warband exists in constant conflict, earning few true allies and making enemies of nearly every established faction they encounter. Their nomadic and destructive nature ensures that they are feared and reviled across the lands, while their allies are often temporary and transactional.
Enemies such as the Tibur Empire, the Emerald Forest, and the Order of the Silverbrand have sworn to destroy the Ashbrand entirely, but the Warband’s resilience, ferocity, and adaptability have ensured their survival.
Their few allies, like fire cultists and hobgoblin mercenaries, share their values of strength and chaos but know that loyalty to the Ashbrand can be as fleeting as a flame in the wind.
