Graveyards of Souls

The craters left by the bombs of the Changelings in the Gene Wars, the Graveyards hold not the physical remains of the bombing victims, but the remnants of their shattered minds, fused with the stone, soil, and even vegetation. Screaming their last moments of pain, forever, they are haunted places. Depending on the location of the individual graves, some nations of Underhill have tried to put the minds to rest. Others have warded the bounds of craters, for fear of erosion and seeds carrying the tainted remains of the bombs downstream and downwind. Still others have tried to weaponize the graves, either by luring enemies within, or leaving chunks of rock and earth in enemy strongholds, to weaken the resolve of defenders. In most nations, these graves are still in use as burial grounds, a place where people to go, to die, to leave their physical forms behind so their minds can join the teeming, shrieking masses.   In all cases, the lore is very clear. The minds of the dead may lay within the graves, but they are not sane. They are not rational.   They are no longer minds at all.

Geography

The craters come in all sizes, from the pits left by the Changelings as they tested their experimental bombs, to the large shallow bowls, big enough to hold a city, from the ends of the Gene Wars. What is in these craters varies depending on surrounding geography. Some are overgrown, and easy to stumble into if the markers and wards are missed. Others are still bare and rocky, or have grown warped trees in the dirt collected at the bottom. As many different terrains as they occur in, so to are they hidden or in plain sight.
