Doomguard
Who Celebrate Destruction and Decay
The Doomguard understands the purpose of everything is to crumble. Existence inevitably falls into ruin-nothing lasts forever, not even the gods. Sinkers don't stand in the way of the multiverse's destruction. They see decay and entropy as entirely natural, something to be fostered in its own time.
They don't recklessly hasten destruction or oppose creation. Instead, they see that every act of creation is intrinsically tied to destruction. Trees must be felled and stone cut to build a house, and the house must eventually burn, rot, or wither away.
While some take this to a chaotic extreme, for many others it remains a guiding philosophy. There are three distinct arguments about how this truth should be handled.
Decay is ecstacy, and therefore the first clique believes the best way to celebrate is to enhance and further the decay of the natural world. Be the chaos and entropy. Start the fire and let the world burn. We must be the arbiters of our decay.
The second, however, understands decay to be a natural part of the world. Thusly, we should do nothing, and allow the forces of nature to take on structures as they will, and eventually all will be well.
The third want to actively slow down decay. If a building need be demolished, then tie it up in court, and wait. They do not wish to fully stop death and entropy, merely delay the inevitable.
The highest-ranking Doomguard members aside from the factol are the doom lords, who each oversee a faction citadel built at the edge of the Elemental Chaos. The Doomguard's leader is the fearless Factol Pentar, who revels in danger and decay. Pentar has come to blows with Harmonium patrols on many occasions. She toys with the idea of aligning with the Hands of Havoc hoping to toss a spark into the mass of dry razorvine that is Sigil. She trains and practices with her faction in the grand hope to disrupt the Great Modron March when it next occurs.
Goals
The Doomguard have a loose power structure, focused more upon how each clique within the faction can uphold their core beliefs, and has a level of autonomy that many other factions do not have. As a result, no faction-wide goals exist save for celebrating and encouraging decay.
Role in Sigil
The Doomguard controls the Armory in Sigil and oversees the production and sale of weapons in the city. Thanks to the quality and number of armaments required by the factions, the Doomguard holds leverage in many interfac-tional negotiations. The Doomguard bears a long, bitter, mutual enmity toward the Harmonium , and the Fraternity of Order rejects the Doomguard's philosophy entirely.
Found within blocky corners are very secret portals to citadels in the negative para-elemental planes, ruled by a Doomlord. Of the many citadels, Citadel Exhalus is adrift in the void of the para-elemental plane of vacuum. Factor Nagaul is the doomlord here, but also oversees all planar citadels and the secretive vault of planes in which the most dangerous items are stored near the interred bones of prior doomlords in a complex within Undersigil.
Factor Spragg is a female celadrin who oversees the Preservation & Conservation Department. She handles oversight of the city's few public parks and the natural resources Sigil does have - Air and Water. They are also the branch that handles the city's recycling and waste management plants. These barmy cutters implement air scrubbers and run water filtration plants to ensure that the air and drinking water in Sigil meets minimum standards for consumption, and ensure that the public green spaces available in Sigil are maintained and protected from wanton development.
Factor Ely Cromlich, a male cambion, is in charge of City Demolitions. They oversee the destruction and tearing down of any buildings, statues, or other locations marked by the Dabus. These sinkers revel in the destruction, which is then often cleaned up by the Preservation and Conservation department. Ely is the best bet for a faction contact. He oversees city demolitions, helps forge weapons, and helps sell them. He's widely considered to be next in line for Factol.
Faction History
The Doomguard were formed during the Great Upheaval as it combined multiple factions into the single group of sinkers. About a hundred forty years later, the Dommguard entered a war with the Harmonium that led them to take the Armory by force. The Harmonium began a multi-month long siege.
During this same time, the Harmonium began attacks against the Athar , and after 2 years, were forced into a blood pact to end the war, granting control of the Armory to the Doomguard.
The Doomguard labored on for years. Just 19 years ago, they created the first Chaos Ships with the Tanar'ri of the Abyss. Massive flying vessels like Spelljammers, flying from consumed energy of souls on a ship made from fleshy scraps like intestines.
Just a year later, however, a riot caused by the then Factol broke out in Sigil, and killed the Factol, leading to Pentar, the then Doomlord of Dust to become Factol.
Beneath the armory is a secretive round lair with ornate columns said to be made of the bones of previous Doomlords. This is where the greater Doomlords gather during meetings. In the center of the Armory is a great forge headed by Ely Cromlich. Their weapons are well known to be some of the best selling in Sigil because of rumors that they absorb spell attacks.
Twenty nine years ago, the Sleeping Sisters volcanic range erupted in Arborea, giving Pentar her first glimpse of entropy, and causing her to seek out the Doomguard.
Pentar is a human ranger, training and practicing with her faction in the grand hope to disrupt the Great Modron March when it next occurs. In many ways, Pentar's the model of a perfect Sinker, preferring to let her long, raven tresses flow freely rather than tie them back, no matter how impractical. She's completely without fear in battle or any other hazardous situations.
And that attracted the attention of the Doomlords, who early on imbued her with the power and responsibility of a champion of entropy.
To the dismay of several of Sigil's factions, Pentar revels in the joys of chaos, and the call to entropy, encouraging seeds of rebellion. Even chaos within her own faction fills her with delight.
