Axani Wildwalkers

Some female Axani children are able to summon portals at will without the use of a portal key or components. After the death of Aoskar several hundred years ago, Axani female children would become blessed by the dying breath of the God and gain the ability to summon portals at will. They generally gain the ability around the age of 3-5 and lose the ability after 5 years, around 8-10 . Not all Axani girls are blessed with this gift, and those that are are venerated. As soon as their power is discovered, they are sent to Sigil to work for the Travel Guild with handsome benefits for both themselves and their families.
However, once they are designated as Wildwalkers, they never see their families again, even after their retirement. Many Axani families struggle with the honor of having a Wildwalker daughter and the devastation of never seeing their daughter or sister again. A few may spend their life savings trying to track down the girl after her retirement, but by that time she's become another anonymous face in the Great Wheel.

There is a superstition that the first Axani Wildwalker after the death of Aoskar was actually an adult male, but the travel caused him to go mad. He claimed he was hunted by something called "The Horror." This is why it's widely believed that only female children have the gift of portal creation, because their young delicate minds don't leave a footprint on the Planescape.
