Master Gunner

The Master Gunner was responsible for the ship's guns and ammunition. This included the careful art of keeping gunpowder dry, making sure the guns were well cleaned and didn't rust, and that everything and all weapons were kept in good repair. He was the head of the gunner crew and made sure that weapons were properly used and taken care of.

A Master Gunner might have in his employ a few young boys called 'Powder Monkeys' that ran the gunpowder that was stored in a different area of the ship than the gundeck to the cannons during battle. This was done to ensure safety and that if the gun deck was hit, there would be minimal black powder to burn there.

This position was an important one, as it might mean the difference between life and death during a maritime conflict.
