First Officer

Also known as a 'first mate', the First Officer was responsible for the deck crew and supplies. They took care of the supplies needed to fit out a vessel and made sure sufficient provisions had been made for the sails, ropes, pulleys, and all other rigging requirements.
The First Officer also took care of raising and lowering the anchor and was responsible for secure moorings when the ship was at port. He checked the tackle once a day and reported to the Captain. At the port, the first mate would make repairs to the sails and rigging.
