Magic-User

The term magic-user is quite broad and describes anyone practicing magic or alchemy.
Ever since magic was outlawed in most of the world, it occasionally happens that innocent people are accused of being a magic-user. Fear and ignorance among the common folk sometimes lead to unfounded accusations, like a skilled herbalist being accused of dabbling in alchemy, or a blacksmith forging a beautiful blade, of having enchanted it with magic.
A conviction of being a magic-user, usually leads to a death sentence, or worse. Erekiath, a country that follows The Light, has on several occasion been accused of hippocracy for doing so, as The Light preaches protection of everyone, both good and evil.

Conviction

Ideally, proof of someone being a magic-user must be produced before one can be convicted, but in some cases just being accused can be enough.
Proof of someone dealing with any kind of magic, or alchemy is enough to convict anyone of being a magic-user.
If the accused is a person of some renown in the community, a trial will usually be held, mostly to besmirch the accused, and to satisfy the public.
It is extremely rare that a convicted magic-user does not receive a death penalty. if the accused was a well-liked person, leniency may be shown, and the person will be allowed to live out the remainder of their life in captivity. This is, however, extremely rare, and has only been granted to persons of high moral integrity, not counting their illicit use of magic.
