The Pillar of Vengeance

In the central square of Altamura stands a sort of obelisk known today as the pillar of revenge, although this has not always been its name. Furthermore, its original appearance and function have long since been forgotten. The local law prohibits anyone from getting close to the pillar so much as to be able to touch it, this is due to the fact that several magical incidents have occurred against those who have touched its surface.

A tale of fight and propaganda

As previously mentioned the monument has changed its name several times over the centuries. Before The conquest of Altamura by the Dragon Empire it was referred to as darkpillar, however to demonstrate superiority the imperial authorities decided to cover the dark rock with the runic engravings with a clay layer on which to engrave a bas-relief the events of the conquest. This work was given the name of Obelisk of the conquest (or of ignominy according to the historians Ahrmur), however to complete it it had been necessary to use over fifty stonemasons due to mysterious magical incidents. When Altamura became independent again it was decided that the Obelisk should disappear, however fearful of what could happen if it had been demolished, it was decided to cover the bas-relief, repeatedly scarred by vandalism or patriotic acts depending on the point of view, with of the marble slabs on which the code of vengeance had been engraved, therefore the pillar took the name it still bears today.

Description of the present monument

Nowadays the pillar consists of a quadrangular prism with the faces covered with white marble with gray-brown veins. On them are engraved, in the runes composed of cuneiform elements of the Ahrmur language, the laws that regulate revenge in the Ahrmur lands. Around it a box hedge and a chain mark the maximum distance at which it is allowed to approach the monument.
