We were lucky our shattered lands didn't fall right back into the ocean after the events of that fateful day. Until we figure out alternative living arrangements to fall back on, we must do what we can to preserve what land we do have left.
In the current era, Phaiyon is a tattered land composed of floating islands. They used to be full continents attached to the planet before
The Great Shattering tore them asunder. The people of Phaiyon who survived were lucky they didn't lose the entirety of their land.
Whatever caused the shattering left behind a surge of arcane energy. This was enough to hold many of the new islands' soil mass in shape. It was uncertain how long it would hold. Within the first couple years researchers and mages worked together to create a more stable solution.
Reinforced Magic Caps
After studying the energy that initially held the land together, they set out to develop a means to generate a similar shield. Sturdy crystals were created to store this energy. Over time they would be embedded into the soil on the bottom of each land mass.
Multiple were used per island. The amount varied based on their size. Once set in place, the crystals were activated to generate the new protective layer. It forms an invisible energy field that provides support and covers the underside of each island like a cap.
Maintenance
These crystals need to be protected and serviced on occasion. Trained technicians are flown down once a month to inspect them. Any broken crystals are replaced. Every three months mages renew the depleted energy supply stored within the crystals.
